2 1. Please provide a brief overview of your organization s mission and work. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.3 million members and online activists. We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montana, and Beijing. Our staff of more than 400 includes lawyers, scientists, policy analysts and educators working to protect the environment and public health. NRDC has played a central role in crafting, implementing, enforcing, and defending the nation s environmental laws for over 40 years. NRDC s mission is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends. We strive to protect nature in ways that advance the longterm welfare of present and future generations. We work to foster the fundamental right of all people to have a voice in decisions that affect their environment. And we seek to break down the pattern of disproportionate environmental burdens borne by people of color and others who face social or economic inequities. NRDC has six main institutional priorities: (1) curbing global warming and creating a clean energy future, (2) reviving the world s oceans, (3) defending endangered wildlife and wild places, (4) protecting human health by preventing pollution, (5) ensuring safe and sufficient water, and (6) fostering sustainable communities. 2. Please describe, to the best of your ability, the anticipated assignments and responsibilities of a post-graduate Fellow in your office. Specific responsibilities will depend on the office and staff team with which the Fellow is placed. All placements are likely to involve legal research and writing to support advocacy by NRDC lawyers and other staff on to protect the environment and public health. Placements with NRDC s Litigation Team (which has branches in our New York, Washington, DC, San Francisco, and Chicago offices) and with other U.S.-based NRDC lawyers who focus on litigation are likely to include drafting legal filings, such as complaints and portions of briefs, presenting and helping more senior attorneys to prepare for oral arguments, and researching potential new legal cases. Litigation Team placements may also include work on litigation discovery. Placements with U.S.-based NRDC lawyers who focus on non-litigation work may include preparing legal analyses to support legislative or administrative advocacy and drafting comment letters or white papers for submission to state or federal agencies. Placements with NRDC s Beijing office will likely involve research on Chinese environmental policy, law, and regulation; counseling of Chinese stakeholders on international approaches that may be possible to implement in China, and implementation of projects to ensure enforcement of and compliance with environmental laws. 3. What, if any, specific skills (i.e., language proficiency or computer familiarity) do you require of the Fellow? We look for strong legal research and writing skills and knowledge of the judicial system and Page 2 of 4
3 environmental law. For placements with the Beijing office, Chinese fluency is preferred. 4. Please provide any additional information about your organization that may be helpful to interested post-graduate applicants. NRDC s legal fellows work under the direct supervision of senior attorneys, but also often work closely with NRDC scientists and policy experts, to advance environmental and public health objectives. Our website (3 1TUwww.nrdc.orgU3 1T) includes more information about NRDC s legal and related advocacy work and NRDC attorney profiles. Page 3 of 4
