About the Program Enclosed are the program description, an application to Oakland University s Graduate School and two recommendation forms. To be admitted, you must provide: Official transcripts A copy of your teaching certificate (front and back, including endorsements) A graduate school application A supplemental program form A goal statement Two recommendations Our Masters of Education in Teacher Leadership program is offered as a cohort model. In a cohort, a group of individuals begin the program at the same time and follow the same course sequence throughout the program. The Macomb Cohort is scheduled to begin Fall 2008, providing minimum enrollment numbers are obtained. How to Apply to the Program Complete the remainder of the documents in this packet. For your convenience, an application for admission checklist is included. Please include a $50 check made payable to Oakland University to cover the graduate application fee. Program Description The Masters of Education in Teacher Leadership program fosters leadership development through an interactive set of experiences that include sound theoretical and best practice knowledge, problem-based coursework and field-based experiences. Oakland University graduate students in the teacher leadership program are empowered to become leaders committed to making schools culturally relevant, just and supportive learning environments which set and maintain high expectations for all students. Program Overview This 35-credit program can be completed in less than two years Teacher-friendly schedule of once-monthly Saturday meetings augmented by online sessions Professor mentors will spend time in the schools with each of the teacher participants Offered as a cohort group All courses held in Macomb County at the Macomb Intermediate School District Program Benefits Participants will gain an understanding of: The role of a teacher leader at the classroom, building, district and profession levels. Building and working within professional learning communities. Diversity and social justice as it relates to student advocacy, relationships and academic performance as well as effective parent and professional relationships. Data collection and data-driven decision making. Technology integration including emerging technologies and curriculum mapping. The teacher leader s role in organizational change and school improvement; as well as the importance of labor unions, school boards, service agencies and connections to professional organizations. Professor mentors will spend time in the schools with each of the teacher participants as they study contemporary issues related to their current work environment. Final projects will be displayed & presented at a teacher-leader conference at the end of the program. Minimum Admission Requirements* An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 A teaching certificate Ready access to K-12 classrooms K-12 teaching experience Two letters of recommendation from individuals in a supervisory relationship to the applicant A statement of professional goals Communication skills commensurate with graduate-level scholarship. Students who are conditionally admitted to the program because of a lower GPA or lack of recommendations must complete a minimum of 8 credit hours (EST 601 and one other core course) with a grade of at least 3.0 in each course. *meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admittance into the cohort program. 11/27/07
