How To Make the S.T.A.R.T. BE EMPOWERED TO MAKE THE STEPS TO ADDICTION RECOVERY TREATMENT WHEN SYMPTOMS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE ARE NOTICED The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified prescription drug abuse as an epidemic (Office of National Drug Control Policy www.whitehouse.gov). BOBBY P. KEARNEY, MD Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences (National Institute on Drug Abuse www.drugabuse.gov). A Board Certified Addictionologist by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Kearney provides a comprehensive service based on his expertise in addiction and pain management. In 2008, he was one of only 25 physicians in the state of North Carolina awarded diplomat status from the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Service providers, community members, friends, and family of people struggling with addiction must be aware of the basic truths about addiction in order to help individuals make the steps to addiction recovery treatment. The S.T.A.R.T. Community Awareness Team provides in-person presentations and educational material to empower you with tools to start the conversation about noticed symptoms of addiction and the referral process for treatment. Dr. Kearney also holds board certification status from The American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Anesthesiology. With over 25 years of clinical experience Dr. Kearney is committed to providing cutting edge technology and treatment strategies in a warm and compassionate environment. Dr. Kearney is a father, husband, son and friend who understands the pain and suffering that addiction creates. He is actively involved in the community serving as a member of the Iredell County Advocacy Academy for Substance Abuse Awareness & Recovery. the disease of addiction can be treated IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW AND SHARE THE FACT THAT ADDICTION IS MEDICALLY TREATABLE, JUST AS OTHER CHRONIC ILLNESSES. NC Medical Board calls for coordination of treatment in new policy Treatment of patients with possible substance use disorder: "...should involve consultation with an addiction specialist before opioid therapy is initiated and include follow-up as needed. Patients who have an active substance use disorder should not receive opioid therapy until they are established in a treatment/recovery program, or alternatives such as co-management with an addiction professional are established. Physicians who treat patients with chronic pain are strongly encouraged to be knowledgeable about addiction, including recognizing behaviors that indicate addiction, and how and when to refer patients for addiction evaluation and treatment." EXPLORE TREATMENT OPTIONS. U.S. Department of Health & Human Services notes: Not all doctors have approval to prescribe this medication, and not all doctors provide counseling for addiction. Board Certified Addictionologist Bobby P. Kearney, MD is authorized to administer Buprenorphine and/or Methadone under a special license granted by both the State and Federal Government. He and the caring staff at ARMS offer a program that includes Individual and Group Counseling, as well as Intensive Outpatient Services. TREATING THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION WITH A PATIENT SHARES. One of the best decisions I ve made in my life was to call A.R.M.S. At Dr. Kearney s office, you are treated like a human being, not just an addict. Every single person on staff is there to help you. A.R.M.S. will give you the tools you need to help you succeed in conquering the disease. MAKE AN EASY REFERRAL. ARMSCanHelp.com/Make-A-Referral ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY "Medication-assisted treatment is treatment for addiction that includes the use of medication along with counseling and other support. Treatment that includes medication is often the best choice for opioid addiction. Taking medication for opioid addiction is like taking medication to control heart disease or diabetes. It is NOT the same as substituting one addictive drug for another. Used properly, the medication does NOT create a new addiction. It helps you manage your addiction so that the benefits of recovery can be maintained." ~ U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Benefits of Buprenorphine-Assisted Treatment Regain normal state of mind, free of drug-induced highs and lows. Reduces problems of withdrawals and cravings. Helps control disease, similar to taking medication for diabetes. Makes one feel normal, not high. Taken as prescribed, proven to be safer, with overdose unlikely. Research shows effective in treating the disease of addiction when combined with individual and group counseling services.
