welcome to a new way to print.

Same standards, different solution. For more than 75 years, we ve been dedicated to providing our customers the very best printed materials with the knowledge and service to back it up. We don t put the U on just anything, so you can count on us to bring the same vigor to our new digital printing system, which is made just for U. &

Flexible beyond compare. Let s say you have a print job with a less than large quantity, say, 100 total. Now say you need to have it printed, bound and ready in say, about 2 days. Now, say you d like this job to have the same usual quality impact that every other job you send to ULitho. Now, let s say, U got it. What used to take days can now be achieved in hours with the ulitho digital print system. A streamlined process. Whether you re a small, medium or large business, we understand the need to provide clients and customers with print solutions that are of the highest value and quality. ULitho Digital printing delivers just that with more timely and cost-effective ways of reaching and influencing your audience. The entire digital process is designed to be quicker, easier and more affordable than traditional printing. Really fast turnaround. Digital printing delivers high-quality printed materials in hours instead of days. With far less time allocated to the printing process, you can focus more energy on creating a product that will keep your clients competitive in the ever-changing world of fluid information. Endless paper options. You won t be disappointed with the results of this high-quality, full-color printing system. Digital printing provides sharp text ad lines as well as rich and detailed halftones. It supports a wide range of paper sizes, stocks, weights, and finishes. Paper costs in short-run digital production are often more affordable than in traditional runs, allowing you the freedom to choose the best paper which may have previously been cost prohibitive. On-press proof. Your proof is perfect. With traditional printing, the proof is often slightly different than the finished product based on many factors. With digital printing, the press is used as the proofing system, so the proof you approve is actually the same thing as the finished piece itself, allowing you and your clients to see exactly how the finished piece will appear.

Affordable and powerful too. At the speed of business today, everything seems to be getting faster and cheaper. But the key is to retain quality and flexibility at the same time. Enter ULitho Digital. Short runs, customization on-the-fly, a blend of tech and speed, and a feature list that s nothing short of stunning. Dig-it. With the ability to adapt to your requirements, digital printing delivers exactly what you need. Shorter runs, lower costs. With digital production, you never print more than is actually needed. Short runs, even a single high-value copy, are cost-effective. This eliminates storage issues associated with traditional long runs as well as dealing with obsolete inventory. As an added incentive to you, clients will be better positioned to commission new design work more often without the burden of large, outdated inventories. Welcome to customized printing. Unlike traditional printing, digital printing allows each piece to be personalized to meet your client s changing needs. Database information such as recipient names and addresses as well as images, colors and design elements can all be easily incorporated. Customized printing is far more convincing and effective because messages are targeted toward individual audiences, instead of broader ranging ones, promoting response rates that are up to three times higher than traditional mailings. A blend of technology and speed. The digital printing process combines the power of an offset press with the flexible short-run economy of a printer. Your clients will benefit from numerous features such as high-quality, on-demand prints with the convenience of short runs and quick turnarounds; completely customized marketing materials; and full-color collated pages ready for assembly. Digital printing exceeds the expectations of jobs demanding quality, flexibility and speed. Features at a glance. Clear and crisp images featuring life-like skin tones, sharp highlight and lowlight details and rich, vibrant color. True colors that can be reproduced on a variety of coated and uncoated substrates. Advanced dry ink technology that exceeds the traditional color gamut of the CMYK offset press by 20% and eliminates the traditional drying process, enabling materials to go directly to finishing. Extensive font options that can print black type clearly and legibly. Electrophotographic technology keeps the optical and mechanical dot gain constant while routine calibration controls the dot gain in all conditions. Proofs that can be run on the same digital press as the final output to ensure the correct color gamut. Exceptional registration.

Capable of great things. How s this for great: we can finish your digital piece using almost all of our traditional finishing techniques. Folding, scoring, embossing, whatever you like. And quick. All this is also backed-up by our service staff ready to teach and learn right beside you. Lastly, it s all really green. How great is that? Digital printing offers the highest quality from start to finish, including our excellent customer care. Capable, from start to finish. The digital print process starts with being fast, flexible and affordable. But it doesn t stop there. Using many of the same finishing and binding systems that we have in place for our traditional print process, we have carefully tailored a set of finishing options to select from making the choice to go digital even more attractive. What s more, our new digital system features an optional glossing unit, creating an exceptional UV-like gloss or matte finish depending on the paper stock being printed. The result is a printed piece that starts fast and finishes strong. Digital prints a really nice green. Green has always been one of our favorite colors, which is why we love how green the new ULitho Digital system is. The intelligent product design of this new press extends the life of the press itself and considerably limits waste. The items used are collected for recycling, reuse or environmentally friendly disposal. And all the dry inks used contain no hazardous UV coating chemicals, which are readily removed during the recycling process. This system is a continuation of our effort to reduce the environmental impact of everything we do. Creating value for all involved. The print landscape is changing rapidly, and our foray into digital is only the beginning. In an increasingly competitive environment, where customer retention and loyalty is of paramount importance, creating more value for you and your customers is key. Being able to provide alternative print solutions that are of the highest quality quickly and efficiently will allow you to distinguish yourself as a strategic communications partner. That s precisely why we made the decision to bring ULitho Digital to you to make you more capable than ever. We re here to help. The ULitho Digital system is a completely new printing approach, capable of changing the way you and your customers think about print. And we re here to help you through the entire process. From sales, to file prep to finished printed piece, you have our steadfast pledge to help you learn about the digital process.

Detailed Information File Preparation Building a PDF for Digital Print Download and import ULitho job options files for Acrobat Distiller or for Adobe Creative Suite. Export PDF directly from all Adobe products using the Ulitho_NexPress settings. If using Quark Express, you will need to postcript files then distill with Acrobat Distiller. All files should be exported or postcripted with.125 bleed and crop marks offset to.125. Use of JPEG compression in PDF s is not recommended, ZIP compression is preferred. Source files should be built to final trim size with bleeds pulled out.125. If you have further questions on how to set up your files, please contact our pre-press department. Prevent Font Conflicts Use Type 1 standard PostScript fonts or True Type fonts. Do not use Multiple Master fonts. Do not apply font styles from the menu or keyboard; instead, choose the correct version of the font from your type menu (i.e., use Times New Roman Bold instead of applying bold to a regular font.) Job Submission Checklist Please submit the following: Screen and printer fonts including those embedded in image files. Supply separate fonts for styles within font families. A printed file directory for reference. A hard copy proof indicating page elements and sequence. Imposition layout or mock-up of the final design. All fonts should be embedded in PDF files. Be sure to: Turn off trapping options or inform us if you ve done the trapping yourself. Convert all artwork to CMYK, RGB or our suggested color mode. Supply images in TIFF, EPS or JPEG formats. Collect all linked files, fonts, images and page elements for output. Specifications Black and grays To print a solid black area, use a formula that combines all CMYK colors to create a rich or super black C40, M30, Y30, K100. For neutral shades of gray, straight tints of black will yield the best results. Spot and Solid Colors Spot color mapping and unique look-up tables automatically match Pantone colors using CMYK dry ink making it unnecessary to alter or reformulate Pantone and other spot colors. The maximum dry ink coverage is 280% because anything in excess may produce a noticeable buildup of layers. Integrate a slight pattern such as a texture, subtle graphic or simple noise, to modulate the color for smooth appearances. Tints and Blends Areas of solid color, tints and blends may reproduce more accurately if filtering techniques such as noise or texture are incorporated in the design phase. Apply the techniques from image manipulation software such as Adobe Photoshop. Create blends from QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, or other common desktop publishing applications. Tints should not be less than 10%. For best results, limit blends to less than 50% value change over 2-4. Scanning and Resolution Scan continuous tone images for 300 dpi at final size. Perform all scaling, rotation and manipulation in your image editing application before linking the images in your layout. Scan line art at a minimum of 600 dpi, up to 1200. To capture a larger color gamut, scan continuous tone images in RGB mode rather than in CMYK mode. Save at 100% of final size and orientation. Do not include screen angles or transfer functions. Examples of maximum coverage Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Total 70% 55% 55% 100% 280% 0% 100% 100% 80% 280%

Trapping Features and Tips Turn off any trapping commands in the page layout program for a high-quality document. To correct slight halo effects on black edges, set your black to overprint the specified tint within the layout application. Steps to a clean finish Printable Area The margins need to be calculated into the final document layout. Allow at least a.25 inch nonprinting margin around the entire final layout, front and back. Ensure that all notes, bleeds and production marks are inside margins. Bleed.125 Minimum Sheet Size = 11 x7.9 Maximum Sheet Size = 14 x20.47 Maximum Image Area = 13.4 x20 Bleeds Allow an extra.125 inch for trimming on the bleed edges. Paper and Substrates Choose from a wide array of paper types including coated, uncoated, matte, gloss and textured finishes. Paper weights can range from 16# bond to 130# cover and label stocks. Imposition, Folding and Finishing With the digital printing process, your documents can be organized as 2-page reader spreads or 1- or 2-page printer spreads. Automatic imposition software manages the setup and appropriate sequencing. Please provide your ULitho representative with a mock-up of your layout. Allow for the proper amount of space in the gutter for the binding process. Cracking in heavy coverage areas is of concern when folding documents produced using the electro-photographic imaging system. Cracking can be reduced by designing your job with less coverage on areas to be folded. Design the fold to go with the grain of the paper and not against it. Score all folds or laminate the final pages (especially covers) to eliminate cracking and produce a durable, polished look. Grain Grain All output from the digital printing system can be laminated or finished with UV coating. Fifth Unit Imaging Solutions Additionally, our press provides a fifth imaging solution for clear overcoating with clear dry ink, Clear dry ink as a protective layer with a matte or gloss finish. Gloss finish is very glossy like a UV or laminate. Matte finish can also be used as a spot coat like varnish. By adding red or blue to the fifth unit we are given the ability to match PMS colors closer then a CMYK trap. Trimming and Binding Commonly used binding methods are available for use with digitally printed documents. Keep your binding options simple and take advantage of fast turnaround.
