TOOLS FOR INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE A Good Study Bible: Choosing a study Bible is a daunting task, second only to choosing a Bible. It seems there is an endless number of study Bibles of all types & translations. Study Bibles reflect particular interest, like archaeology, apologetics theological & denominational perspective or by popular authors. There's no easy answer. (Having more than one study Bible can be a solution.) Most study Bibles contain notes with commentary on the text regarding its historical background, language, or relation to the rest of Scripture. Some are more of a word study rather than a commentary, such as the Hebrew-Greek Word Study Bible. The Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible contains a reference system that links a verse in one passage with others that refer to the same topics found in the verse. This Bible also contains an index to the topics and the verses that refer to them. Naves Topical Bible contains Bible text arranged by topic. Both Thompson and Naves make it easy to study the Bible by topics. Many study Bibles contain text written by or influenced by favorite authors such as C.S. Lewis, John MacArthur, etc. Some study Bibles are dedicated to a specific theme or reader interest. You can get a good study Bible at Lifeway or online at sites such as cokesbury.com or christianbook.com. Commentaries: Commentaries are great resources for interpreting a biblical text. Some commentaries are written on a very high academic level and focus on the Greek or Hebrew of the text as well as the reception of the text through history such as the Word Biblical Commentary. Commentaries that I would recommend for use include Interpretation: A Commentary for Teaching and Preaching, and The NIV Commentary. The NIV Commentary is available in our church library. Interpretation is available at some public libraries and at most college campus libraries. Some commentaries, such as The New Interpreter s Bible will give you information for all three steps of interpretation. Bible Dictionaries: Bible dictionaries are one of the most practical and useful theological reference books available. The combination of definitions and proper names for Biblical words with online verse reference, allows users to define and analyze Scripture. Discover the meaning of words and study them in context to the theological concepts of that specific verse or passage. Many word searches also include the original Greek and Hebrew word with meaning. Bible dictionaries vary on their effectiveness and thoroughness of biblical content. The Anchor Bible Dictionary is the best on the market today and is available in our church library. The Internet: As it is with anything that you search for on the internet you must be careful what you look at because some things are better than others. When searching for tools to help with interpretation I would recommend looking at online sermons from preachers and pastors you trust. Remember that anyone can set up a webpage and put wrong information on it. Other good tools include using the public library to search for articles online through NClive.com. You can access thousands of journal articles at the click of a button from your home with a library card number. Try searching by typing in the scripture reference, i.e. Genesis 1:3, and see what comes up!
