MA HERITAGE MANAGEMENT SH 534 - Part-Time 1. Background The MA Heritage Management course is two- year part time postgraduate programme focusing on teaching of skills and inculcating experience required for the management of heritage in Mauritius and the region. The University of Mauritius is collaborating with international institutions of the East African region to offer candidates from the South Western Indian Ocean heritage education according to international standards. Contributing institutions are: the Centre for Heritage Development in Africa (CHDA), the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), the Ministry of Arts and Culture of Mauritius, the National Heritage Fund (NHF), the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund (AGTF), the Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund (LMHTF), and the National Parks and Conservation Service (NPCS). The course is designed to address heritage issues using an interdisciplinary approach and will be taught by specialists and research active lecturers. Students will learn how to effectively work with experts in heritage, archaeology, architecture, and conservation. Key issues such as legal framework, fundraising, project supervision, and sustainability will be addressed. Prospective students should hold a good honours degree in any area of Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Architecture, Engineering and Sciences. 2. Objectives The objective is to give to students the necessary heritage management tools in line with national and regional strategies to enhance the cultural heritage management in the South Western Indian Ocean. Themes addressed are: Cultural Heritage Development Heritage Conservation and Politics of Heritage Heritage Economics & HR Capacity Building Cultural Heritage Sustainability and Tourism Conceptualizing Educational Programme & Exhibitions Heritage Interpretation and the Public 3. General Entry Requirements Successful completion of an undergraduate degree with at least a Second Class or 50%, whichever is applicable or a GPA not less than 2.5 out of 4 or equivalent, from a recognised higher education institution OR alternative qualifications acceptable to the University of Mauritius 4. Programme Requirements A good honours degree or equivalent in the humanities, architecture, social sciences and sciences is required. Persons already in service in the heritage field may apply upon proof of relevant practical experience. International candidates are required to provide evidence of a good command of English if it is not their first language as most courses will be delivered in English. Few lectures may be in French due to the interdisciplinary nature of programme and the use of resource persons from the South West Indian Ocean region. 1

Assessment Each module will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows (unless otherwise specified): Written examination of 2-3 hours duration and course work assessment carrying 30-40% of total marks. Course work assessment will be based on seminar presentations and / or project work. Practical modules will be assessed entirely by continuous assessment (see module descriptions below). EXCEPT FOR THESE MODULES, CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT WILL INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE ASSIGNMENT. An overall total of 40% for combined course work assessment and written examination components would be required to pass the module, without minimum thresholds within the individual course assessment and written examination. All modules carry their own credit value. Dissertations carry 9 credits and will be in an area of specialisation. 9. Submission Deadlines for Dissertations First Draft: End of August of the academic year. Final Copy: end of 3 rd week of December of that year by 4.00 pm at latest. 10. Choice of Electives Students will be required to submit their choice of electives in semester 1, 2 and 3 in order of priority during the application process. A minimum of five students is required for a module to be offered. The University reserves the right not to offer a given elective module if the critical number of students is not attained / and subject to availability of resource specialist. 2
