GRAND CHALLENGES IN THE DANUBE REGION 11 PRIORITY AREAS FOCUS ON IMPROVING: untapped shipping potential and lack of road and rail transport connections insufficient energy connection environmental threats (water pollution, floods, climate change) uneven socio-economic development uncoordinated education, research and innovation systems shortcomings in safety and security

PILLAR C- BUILDING PROSPERITY IN THE DANUBE REGION Pillar C focuses on innovation, information society, competitiveness of enterprises, education, labor market and marginalized communities.

JRC PRIORITIES HORIZONTAL PRIORITY Support to research and innovation strategies for Smart Specialization in the Danube Region (supporting the objectives of Priority Area 7 in the field of research and innovation) VERTICAL PRIORITIES 1.environment protection, 2. irrigation and agricultural development, 3. navigability, 4. energy production.

DRRIF- DANUBE REGION RESEARCH & INNOVATION FUND PA7 ORIENTATION & most important FS project EC IDEA to establish the fund from the beginning of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region Based on similar action within the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (BONUS) Establishment of a sustainable fund to support research, technological development and innovation in the Danube Region in order to build capacities of research, higher education and innovative businesses to increase their competitiveness and to support networking in the Danube Area.

EUSDR THE BENEFIT FOR WBC UPPER DANUBE LOWER DANUBE DIFFERENCES IN PERFORMANCE Cooperation between the most advanced and innovative regions from the upper Danube with less performing regions from the lower Danube should be established with the aim of mutual learning and growth of the whole macro region

LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER How competitiveness and innovative drive in the Danube Region can be strengthened by the experiences of the Four Motors regions? 1. company networking event brings companies from the regions together 2. institutional networking tend to result in an overall economic development 3. presentation of successful models of crossborder cooperation developed in the Four Motors regions can help their transfer in the Southeast Danube Region

DANUBE PROGRAMME 2014-2020 In December 2012 the European Commission proposed to create a new transnational cooperation programme for the 2014-2020 period. The Danube programme area includes Austria; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bulgaria; Croatia; Czech Republic; Germany (Baden- Württemberg and Bavaria); Hungary; the Republic of Moldova; Montenegro; Romania; Serbia; Slovakia; Slovenia; Ukraine. The preparation of the new programme is conducted by the Programming Task Force: a committee of representatives from all the Danube partner states. Thematic priorities of the Danube programme will be defined in line with the relevant draft EC legislation, the national priorities of Partner States, and reflect the needs of the programme area. Topics to be addressed by programme priorities may include many of traditional transnational cooperation topics, like innovation, transport, environment, etc
