Diploma in MEDICAL ASSISTING ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS 2015 MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Medical Assisting Diploma program at Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) is to provide excellent outcomes-based education in an effective training program that promotes global competitiveness in the healthcare market by increasing student intellectual awareness of community, economics, social and cultural developments within the communities they serve. This comprehensive program offers students an opportunity to learn medical, administrative, and clinical skills and earn a diploma in Medical Assisting. In cooperation with the community medical facilities who will serve as externship clinical sites, the program will prepare its graduates for the national certification exam as well as a rewarding entry-level career in Medical Assisting. ADMISSION PROCEDURES Students are admitted to the Medical Assisting Diploma program (D45400) in accordance with policies set by VGCC. Each applicant is required to meet the minimum admission eligibility requirements as set by the College. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission into the program, only an opportunity for consideration. The selection process for this program includes Eligibility Checklist completion (must be completed before consideration for the Medical Assisting Diploma program), Points Allocation, and Acceptance Status (determined after June 2, 2015). Regulations, procedures, and course requirements are subject to change as necessary and without prior notice. NOTE: This program is offered at the Franklin County Campus in Louisburg. Applicants found guilty of a criminal offense may not be eligible to take the CMA certification examination. ELIGIBILITY CHECKLIST COMPLETION 1. Apply to VGCC. Designate Medical Assisting Diploma as the desired program of study. Deadline for application to VGCC for the 2015 Medical Assisting Diploma program is May 28, 2015 by 5 p.m. in person or 11:59 p.m. online. Applications will continue to be processed until program has reached capacity. Applicants will be placed into a Pre-Health Curriculum (Associate in General Education-General Science A10300S), until selected into the program. 2. Submit official transcripts of high school graduation or equivalency and all post-secondary transcripts to the Admissions Office. 3. Complete placement testing with scores that must meet the requirements designated by the College for enrollment into ENG 111 and DMA 040. Students may be able to waive placement testing with: High school transcript: Students currently enrolled in high school should submit a high school transcript after their senior year first semester grades are posted. High school transcripts may be evaluated for placement test waiver if the student graduated within the past five years. Standardized test scores (SAT, ACT) College credit in transferrable English and Math NOTE: Test scores or developmental coursework must be completed within five years of the beginning of Fall 2015 entry date. 4. Complete a high school or basic post-secondary Biology course with a grade of "C" or better. 1 (Rev. 11/14)

5. Achieve a program-specific GPA of 2.0 or higher as calculated on May 28, 2015. A grade of "C" or better is required for all general education courses. BIO course(s) required for the program must be completed within 10 years of the date beginning of Fall 2015 entry date. 5. All indebtedness to the College must be paid by May 28, 2015. 6. The student must complete the Eligibility Checklist and submit to Health Sciences Admissions by May 28, 2015, at 5 p.m. to be considered for Fall 2015 admission. ADMISSION POINTS ALLOCATION The following items will be used to calculate points toward selection into the program. County of residence (Franklin, Granville, Vance, or Warren)...10 points See Notes: Item 4 (below) for additional information. OR Students not receiving the 10 points for county of residence may take at least 75% of the general education requirements (11 credits) for Medical Assisting at VGCC before selection...5 points Documentation of completion of a health related field with a clinical component...5 points Points earned for course performance/completion will be earned as follows: Grade Points C... 3 B... 5 A... 10 BIO 163 (Only completed series of ENG 111 BIO 168 & BIO 169 may be accepted) OST 131 CIS 111 (CIS 110 may also be accepted) PSY 150 Continuous full-time employment in the medical field, 1 or more years...10 points Continuous full-time employment in the medical field, 6 months to 1 year...5 points Continuous part-time employment in the medical field, 1 or more years...3 points Points for high school, High School Equivalency (HSE) or Adult High School Diploma (AHSD) HSE Scores High School QPA AHSD Points 240-260 2.0 2.99 2.0 2.99 3 261 and above 3.0 4.00 3.0 4.00 5 ACCEPTANCE STATUS - (Determined after June 2, 2015) Accepted pending completion of items on page 3, IMPORTANT (A. 1 & 2) Not Accepted NOTES: 1. Any student completing the Eligibility Checklist but not admitted into the program this year must complete a new Eligibility Checklist for entry into the Medical Assisting Diploma program the next year, if interested. 2. It is mandatory for a student to inform the Admissions Office of any changes occurring since the date of application in order for corrections to be made to phone number, address, etc. 3. After acceptance into the program, a grade of C or better is required for all classes. 4. Students with Post Office Box addresses must provide proof of county residence by 5 p.m. on May 28, 2015. Students who complete change of address forms into the four-county service area by May 28, 2015 will receive county of residence points. 5. Completion of all requirements for admission does not guarantee acceptance into the Medical Assisting Diploma program. 6. Any transfer credit for Medical Assisting (MED) classes must be approved by the Program Head. All other transfer credit policies apply as outlined in the VGCC catalog. 2

7. When there is a tie in total points, students will be accepted in the order their fully-completed Eligibility Checklist to the Medical Assisting Diploma program was received in Health Sciences Admissions. 8. Applicants who have been admitted to the Medical Assisting Diploma program two times will not be considered for readmission into the Medical Assisting Diploma program. 9. All related general education courses not completed before acceptance into the Medical Assisting Diploma program must be taken before or during the semester in which they are listed in the Semester Course Sequence. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the program. IMPORTANT A. To be fully accepted into the Medical Assisting Diploma program, the following items must be completed and received by the Program Head of the Medical Assisting Diploma program no later than the date specified on the acceptance letter. Failure to submit items by the deadline will forfeit your acceptance. 1. Evidence of current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Certification. No online courses will be accepted. 2. Completed VGCC medical form and physical exam. (Forms available online at the Health Sciences Division website) Students in the Medical Assisting Diploma program at VGCC are responsible for keeping their medical information and CPR certification updated and current. This includes flu shot for current year, TB tests, Tdap booster, etc. Any violation of these may result in dismissal from the program. B. All students accepted into the Medical Assisting Diploma program may be subject to a criminal background check, and/or fingerprinting. Fees for background checks and/or fingerprinting will be the responsibility of the student. Certain criminal activity, as evidenced by a criminal background check, may disqualify a student from clinical participation. C. Clinical sites may, at their discretion, require a drug screening prior to allowing students into the clinical setting. Any fees will be the responsibility of the student. Testing positive on the drug screening, or evidence of tampering with a specimen, will disqualify a student from participation from the clinical assignment. D. Please be aware that failure to participate in a clinical assignment based on either the drug screening or criminal background check will result in dismissal from the Medical Assisting Diploma program. 3
