Coaching Staff 4 Athletic Director/Head Baseball Coach Ross Jones Ross Jones joined the St. Johns River State College staff as the head baseball coach on June 10, 2008 and assumed the position of athletic director on June 1, 2009. In his five seasons at SJR State, Jones has accumulated an overall record of 147-110 and a Mid-Florida Conference record of 65-54. These five seasons have been among the program s most successful in its 53 year history. During Jones first season at the helm, he led the Viking baseball team to a 33-17 record and a fourth place finish in the Mid-Florida Conference. The 2010 season saw the Viking baseball team return to the FCSAA/Region 8 State Tournament for the first time since 1989 after finishing second in the Mid-Florida Conference, and in 2013, the Vikings won their first Mid-Florida Conference Championship since 1977. The 2013 team had an overall record of 38-18 and an 18-6 conference record. The 38 wins broke the previous school record of 33 wins in a season by the 2009 team. The 18 conference wins broke the record of 15 previously held by the 1968 and 1970 teams. Fifty-four of Jones players at SJR State have transferred to four year colleges after finishing their eligibility at SJR State. Of these 54 players, 47 signed baseball scholarships. Some of the NCAA Division 1 schools that have signed players from SJR State include Florida State, the University of North Florida, Tulane, the University of Virginia, Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Mercer, Liberty, Villanova, Hofstra, Nichols State and Tennessee-Martin. Some of the NCAA Division 2 schools that have signed SJR State players include national powers Tampa, Florida Southern, Valdosta State and West Florida. Many of Jones players have also earned postseason awards. Two of these were pitchers Marshall Stalvey and Chris Fern. In 2009, Stalvey was named the Mid-Florida Conference Pitcher of the Year and was also named to the FCSAA All- State First Team. Stalvey signed with St. Leo University. In 2011, Fern was named the Mid-Florida Conference and the FCSAA Fireman of the Year. Fern is the single season and career saves leader at SJR State and signed to play at the University of Virginia. In 2013, shortstop Casey Eddinger was named the Mid-Florida Conference Defensive Player of the Year and catcher Blake Swann was named to the FCSAA All-State First Team. Pitcher Matt Pennington was named the 2013 Bill Tuten Award winner for the most outstanding student-athlete of the year in the FCSAA. Jones began his coaching career as an assistant to Dusty Rhodes at the University of North Florida, where he spent a total of three seasons in two separate stints (1993 and 2000-2001). He spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt University (1994-1999), serving as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Jones also spent six seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Florida under Head Coach Pat McMahon. As a recruiting coordinator at Vanderbilt and Florida, Jones helped sign some of the most talented players, not only in Florida, but also across the nation. Seven of his recruiting classes were ranked in the top 25 nationally, with three in the top 10. His 2003 and 2005 recruiting classes at the University of Florida were both ranked number three in the nation by Collegiate Baseball magazine. As a pitching coach, Jones has tutored 54 pitchers who have gone on to sign professional contracts, including Clinton Johnston, the Pittsburgh Pirates number one draft pick in 1998. Also, eight of Jones pitchers have received All-American honors, including Todd Ewasko, the NCAA Division 2 National Pitcher of the Year in 2001, and Justin Hoyman, the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2004. While Jones was coaching at the University of North Florida in 2000 and 2001, the Ospreys won consecutive Peach Belt Conference crowns and appeared in back-to-back NCAA Division 2 College World Series. UNF finished third in the nation both years. Jones also played a major role in the University of Florida s 2005 Southeastern Conference championship and the Gators postseason run to the NCAA Division 1 College World Series, where the Gators played in the National Championship Series against the University of Texas. Jones is a 1984 graduate of Palatka High School. Upon graduating from high school, he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 1984 Major League Baseball amateur draft. He spent seven seasons pitching for the Rangers and Montreal Expos minor league systems. After retiring from professional baseball, Jones earned his A.A. degree from SJR State in 1991 and his bachelor s degree in education from the University of North Florida in 1993. Jones is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time. Ross and his wife,, have two sons, Tyler (21) and Hunter (18), and two daughters, Taylor (16) and Tessa (14).

Joe H. Pickens, J.D., President Welcome to St. Johns River State College, home of the 2013 Mid-Florida Conference Champions! As we begin the 2014 baseball season, I would like to thank you and our sponsors for supporting our student-athletes, the College and its mission in the pursuit of academic, artistic and athletic excellence. Since 1958, the College has been dedicated to the positive development of young men and women through a variety of academic and athletic programs. It is our fundamental belief that athletic endeavors, physical challenges and healthy competition inspire the strong character that is essential in the development of tomorrow s leaders. Following the 2012 reorganization of our athletic programs, the College is better equipped to focus its resources on the programs we retained, enhancing the financial and academic support necessary to achieve immediate competitive success and increased scholastic achievement. Last year, a number of our athletes not only graduated with stellar athletic achievements, but each team s collective grade point average also ranked higher than the student body s GPA as a whole, giving true meaning to the term student-athlete. I would also like to congratulate our student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent to advance their academic and athletic careers at the university level. We are proud of our student-athletes for their accomplishments, both on the field and in the classroom. For more than 50 years, the communities of Putnam, Clay and St. Johns counties have entrusted SJR State for its academic excellence. Our close-knit environment is ideal for fostering each student s potential as he or she prepares to either enter the university system or enter the workforce as a trained professional. I hope you enjoy today s game, and I invite you and your family to return to our beautiful campus to experience and support our volleyball and softball teams as well. Go Vikings! Coach John Tindall Tindall Field is a tribute to Coach John Tindall for his 34 years of service and dedication to St. Johns River State College. His devotion and commitment to academic and athletic excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his players, fellow coaches and community. Coach Tindall served as the head baseball coach for 30 years and amassed 493 victories, six Mid-Florida Conference Championships and nine FCCAA State Tournament appearances. He is a member of the FCCAA Hall of Fame and a recipient of the FCCAA Baseball Coaches Achievement Award. Coach Tindall will forever be remembered for his ability to motivate and encourage young people to strive for success on and off the field. 7
