Herschel Infrared Installer Guide Herschel Infrared Ltd 2015. All Rights Reserved.

Where to position in a room Where the people are What is the room used-for and where will the people be? You want the best comfort for people. Where the thermal mass is Aim the heater where it can heat up materials that will absorb the heat (wood, carpets, stone walls) and avoid materials that will reflect it (shiny surfaces) or let it pass through (glass). Cater for room shape A room which has complex shapes presents blind spots for Infrared Heating. Position heating to avoid cold spots (and avoid windows Long narrow rooms may require several heaters, so mounting from the ceiling may give better cover (especially if the wall has windows). Heater weights The mounting surface must be strong enough to bear the weight of the heater. Heaters can weigh anything from a few kilos to 28kg depending on size. For most, this load is spread between 2 to 4 mounting brackets depending on the type of unit or panel being mounted. For the Pulsar at 28kg it is a single eye for mounting via cable. Your surface must be capable of holding the entire weight of the heater. Ensure adequate hard points exist to ensure this. For ceiling-mounted heaters you are looking at a weight of between 4-8kg. Be especially careful to ensure the correct mount is used (details in installation instructions) and that the heater cannot possibly move once mounted. If a heater is to be fitted into a ceiling grid, the grid and grid-bearers must have the combined strength to hold the weight of all the panels - which will be considerably more than the previous acoustic tiles. For any type of ceiling-mounted heaters the mount must be able to support the weight of the heaters, plus supporting wire and electric wire. Herschel Infrared Ltd 2015. All Rights Reserved.

Panel Precautions Be sure to read the installer guides also supplied with each unit. If your electric supply exceeds 250 Volts, do not use the heater and contact your supplier. Mount all heaters out of the reach of children. The minimum distance of the panel to the floor should be 1.2m. As with any heater, avoid the possibility of people being able accidentally to fall against the heater or being unable to move away from it. The space between the rear of the panel and the wall must be unobstructed. A minimum 25mm should exist between the edges of the panel and ceilings (this does not apply to panels mounted in a ceiling grid). The minimum distance to objects in front of the heater must be 400mm and 200mm clear either side. Never mount the heater where there is a risk it could fall into any kind of water container. Do not install in rooms where direct contact with water is possible. The electrical circuit to power the heater must be capable of disconnection and de-activation by a switch, fuse, RCD or GFCI. Never drill through the panel surface. The heater must be cold for dismounting and moving.

Mounting the Select Panel Stick the template to the wall you intend to hang the heater ensuring: a) The template itself is level The power box is in the corner you want it in (relative to mains). b) Note which hole you need to be drilling! Mounting the panel - 2 Arrange the mounting hardware and fabric insulation pads. Remove backing film and carefully stick-in-place the insulation pads on the rear of the panel. (Double check!) Drill the hole on the template that is correct for the orientation on the wall. (In this case it is the holes marked A ). Remove the template. Insert rawlplugs and screwin mounting screws, leaving the screw head and 2-3mm of shank exposed (to mount the brackets on). Herschel Infrared Ltd 2015. All Rights Reserved.

Space Heater Precautions Be sure to read the installer guides also supplied with each unit. If your electric supply exceeds 250 Volts, do not use the heater and contact your supplier. The unit rises to very high temperatures in use and must never be touched when on and left for 30 minutes to cool down before handling. Mount all heaters out of reach. The minimum distance of the unit to the floor should be 2.3 2.5m with the heater mounted at 60. Never mount the heater perpendicularly downwards. The minimum distance of the unit to the ceiling must be 300mm. Overhead cover of 2m must be available above the heater if the heater is for outside use. Do not install the heater near to any combustible material. As with any heater, avoid the possibility of people being able accidentally to fall against the heater or being unable to move away from it. Never mount the heater where there is a risk it could fall into any kind of water container. Do not install in places where direct contact with water is possible. The electrical circuit to power the heater must be separately switched or a switched spur taken from the ring main. Power to the device must be capable of disconnection and de-activation by a switch, RCD, GFCI or fuse, the rating of which should follow table 1 (previous slide). Permanent cable to the heater up-to the supplied cable must be correctly rated solid core. Flexible cable is prohibited by IEE regulations which also preclude the use of a 13A plug and socket for these installations.

Notes about placement A thermostat for an Infrared panel needs to be placed as far away as practical from the panel within limits of the power lead (for plug-in types), ideally at panel-level and at approximately 90% * of the limits of zone to be heated (for remote controller types). Plug-in type controls: Remote controller type controls: (Zone to be heated) Ideal thermostat placement is in-line with panel height, but this is not usually practical due to socket placement. Place controller 1.5m from floor. * Placement of the controller at 90% of the zone limit allows you enough flexibility to experiment with time and temperature to reach the desired comfort level. At 100% of zone limits, you lose this flexibility and the heater may mostly be on.

In-line plugin type Suitability: Single Room, Single Zone, Single Panel Basic wiring: Single panel plugs into thermostat, which plugs into 13 amp domestic socket. Multiple panels in same room: Use a centralised wireless controller-type (next page) to avoid interlock (one panel s thermostat reacting to another panel s heat). Circuit capacity: Either add panels to existing 16 Amp ring assessed for average of overall consumption and do not exceed average maximum load. Or create dedicated 16 Amp ring specifically for use by infrared panels. Do not exceed average maximum load.

Wireless Control with plugin receiver Suitability: Single Room, Single Zone, Multiple Panels RF waves Remotely mounted Thermostatic Control (Battery Powered) Basic wiring: Single panel plugs into Wireless receiver, which plugs into 13 amp domestic socket. Remote Thermostatic control is battery powered. Multiple panels in same room: Remotely mounted controller will control up to 4 wireless receivers in a room. Not suitable for controlling multiple rooms / different zones. Circuit capacity: Either add panels to existing 16 Amp ring assessed for average of overall consumption and do not exceed average maximum load. Or create dedicated 16 Amp ring specifically for use by infrared panels. Do not exceed average maximum load. Herschel Infrared Ltd 2015. All Rights Reserved.
