Introduction to DE-CIX NGN Andreas Sturm andreas.sturm@de-cix.net

Today s Situation: How does it look like?

Current situation Carrier s Data and Voice business operations are controlled by different departments IP transit and peering partnerships are established since years Volumes of IP data are increasing TDM voice traffic has P&L impact still - but it is migrating towards the IP World (however slowly but steadily) TDM and VOIP - interconnection partnerships are established since years, locally DTAG is an important business partner VOIP business is growing step-by-step, we suppose that typical VOIP carrier operates currently up to 12 interconnections DE-CIX Management GmbH #4

X X X X X German Service Provider GW PSTN - No VoIP Features - Reduced VoIP Quality - PSTN transit costs -PSTN Gateway costs GW German Service Provider X X German Service Provider GW GW German Service Provider X X X X X DE-CIX Management GmbH #5

NGN Interconnect the new DE-CIX NGN: What is new?

Existing DE- CIX platform Same transport infrastructure Proven DE-CIX Quality Scalable, easy to setup solution DE-CIX Management GmbH #8

NGN Interconnect the new DE-CIX NGN: What does it mean?

DE-CIX NGN Setup DE-CIX NGN is a Carrier Class Service XConnect is DE-CIX s technology partner Security IP layer Direct connection to DE-CIX private LAN Firewall protection of DE-CIX NGN service (DDOS, ACL etc.) SIP/RTP Media Layers SBC topology hiding, CAC, SIP normalisation/validation RTP relay topology hiding, NAT traversal, no media detection Business Layer A/B number validation and policy enforcement DE-CIX Management GmbH #10

DE-CIX NGN Setup Availability No single point of failure (N+M for all components) Dual-site (geographical redundancy) DE-CIX SLA backed IP and transport infrastructure 99.99% Availability target Support 24x7x365 monitoring and repair 24x7x365 Customer Help-Desk SLA On the DE-CIX port (Master SLA) On the DE-CIX NGN platform incl. access (amendment, specific SLA) Individual amendments based on the community of interests created DE-CIX Management GmbH #11

NGN Interconnect the new DE-CIX NGN: What does the system allow?

Expanding the locations for interconnection among trusted parties NGN SP A NGN SP B Existing NGN Interconnection Hubs Amend the existing interconnection contracts, nationally or internationally, by one new point of interconnection (DE-CIX) DE-CIX Management GmbH #13

Offer termination or transit (nationally, internationally) to many parties at one trusted POP NGN SP A NGN SP B NGN SP D Service Provider A creates an offering (private federation) and invites participants to join (SP B,C,D,...), nationally or internationally DE-CIX Management GmbH #14

Create specific, trusted federations (communities of interest), tailored to carriers needs NGN SP A NGN SP B NGN SP D Service Providers A, B,C, D, create a public federation and establish the technical as well as the commercial agreement to exchange traffic (nationally or internationally) DE-CIX Management GmbH #15

Develop and participate in many different federations NGN SP A NGN SP B NGN SP D DE-CIX Management GmbH #16

NGN Interconnect the new DE-CIX NGN: How to connect to? What do I need?

How to connect my SBC to DE-CIX NGN physically? Connect to DE-CIX NGN network Use a new dedicated physical port Use existing port if possible and establish a VLAN on existing port DE-CIX NGN has a separate VLAN, AS number / IP address inside the DE-CIX technical architecture (separate /23 network) Customer sets up BGP session Customer s IP configuration need to have link between customer and DE-CIX as well as routing scheme Customer tells DE-CIX the separate AS nbr for the DE-CIX NGN service DE-CIX advertises its own networks default, customers need to define on top of IP also the SIP media side Create on the application layer SIP trunk(s) to DE-CIX NGN network Trust SIP and RTP IPs e.g. in SBC DE-CIX Management GmbH #18

Directory Server DE-CIX Peering Fabric Vortex NP Database Vortex Registry Interconnect Hub Interconnect Hub SBC, SIP Proxy and RTP Relay CAC, Topology Hiding, Interworking (SIP-SIP) Registry query for policy and routing Generates CDR for billing and reporting Vortex NP Database Authoritative record of TN to SP owner Registry TN/SP/Route mapping (sync from Vortex DB) Central routing and policy server Directory Server Support Registry edge query from SP network (SIP/ENUM) DE-CIX Peering Network Private, Dedicated SLA-backed transport layer on DE-CIX network Connects customers to VoIP Exchange elements DE-CIX Management GmbH #19

NGN Interconnect the new DE-CIX NGN: What are the advantages and benefits?

Advantages of the DE-CIX NGN platform Participation in the NGN-Platform will enable NGN sessions to all participating carriers ( no individual lines or dedicated systems per carrier required). Single system connect includes normalization function, no individual conformance or interoprability testing with other carriers Fully redundant components, multi-site deployment and internal re-routing capabilities within the platform will provide a secure fail-over (designed for better than 99,99% availablility) Full integration with internet services and internet peering, no requirement for additional infrastructure Cost based on infrastructure usage, no direct volume based charges Available at primary, cost-effective sites no private data center 12. September 2012 DE-CIX Management GmbH #21

DE-CIX NGN Benefits Flexibility Where possible DE-CIX will work with customers to tailor the implementation to their specific network requirements. Neutrality DE-CIX will not compete with our customers, and all members are listened to equally. Experience DE-CIX and XConnect have years of experience in deploying and operating NGN interconnection solutions. Future Direction DE-CIX will work with our members to define the future direction of DE-CIX NGN as members deploy and enhance their NGN networks and service set. DE-CIX Management GmbH #22

DE-CIX NGN Benefits Simple to implement NGN interconnection which supports end-to-end VoIP services across networks. High quality VoIP interconnection, with guaranteed QOS and availability, as good as the PSTN. Reach multiple networks with a single interconnect, reducing the technical, operational and commercial costs & risks of multiple direct interconnections. Reduced time to implement multiple interconnects. Bandwidth aggregation efficient use of IP interconnect bandwidth by aggregation of traffic to multiple partners. DE-CIX Management GmbH #23

NGN Interconnect the new DE-CIX NGN: Example

DE-CIX Peering Fabric Call +49789 Directory Server 1 Vortex NP Database Vortex Registry 2 3 SP A Network 6 4 SP B Network 5 Interconnect Hub SP C Network (1) SP A user dials +49789 (2) SP A network queries Edge DS (SIP or ENUM). Registry checks that the B TN is reachable via the Exchange Returns the SIP address of the Interconnect Hub. (3) SP A sends SIP call to Hub. (4) Hub queries Registry Registry checks A/B TN Is call allowed? Returns SIP address of SP C. (5) Hub forwards SIP call to SP C, (with interworking as required) and onward to SP C user. (6) Subsequent SIP/Media relayed via hub. +49123 +49456 +49789 DE-CIX Management GmbH #25
