Lion Brand Vanna s Style Picnic Basket Placemats SKILL LEVEL- Easy Plus Picnic Basket Placemats SIZE One Size Finished Width: About 16 inches (40.5 cm) Finished Height: About 12 inches (30.5 cm) MATERIALS Lion Brand Vanna s Style (Art #867) 867-125, Taupe: 5 skeins/set of 4 placemats Lion Brand crochet hook size G-6 (4.25 mm) or size needed for gauge Lion Brand Stitch marker Lion Brand Tapestry needle GAUGE 17 stitches and 12 rows in pattern/4 inches (10.2 cm), blocked For gauge swatch, ch 28. Last 3 chs count as dc on Foundation Row. Work in pattern through Row 16. Each row will have 26 sts. Fasten off. Lightly steam block on WS. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, use a smaller size hook; if more stitches and rows, use a larger size hook. NOTES 1. When you work fpdc, tilt the fabric slightly away from you to make it easier to go behind the post and come out to the front again. 2. When you work bpdc, tilt the fabric slightly toward you to make it easier to expose the back posts and come out to the back again. 3. As you establish the post pattern on Rows 1 and 2, make sure you keep the fabric upright and do not inadvertently turn it upside-down. Once the pattern is established, the top and bottom will be obvious. 4. Post stitches are identified in context. For example, stitches that are fpdc on one row are classified as bpdc stitches when the work is turned. 5. Post stitches reinforce each other for four rows, then the pattern is switched for the next set of four rows. This creates the basketweave effect. 6. To start a new skein, work last st of current skein to last yarn over. Yarn over with new skein and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new skein. 8
