1 Waves is a slightly more than semicircular shawl that is knit from the neck edge downward. Short rows form the neck rounding, followed by regular increases in the body of the shawl. It can easily be shortened or lengthened by knitting more or less pattern sections. Size: height 21 from neck edge to lower edge (washed and blocked) Yarn: Squoosh Fiberarts Merino Cashmere : Sport, (247yd/4oz), or other heavy DK, light worsted yarn Color A: natural 2 skeins (500 yds) Color B: coal 1 skein (250 yds) Shawl can be knit with finer or thicker yarns however the size will change accordingly Needle: US mm circular needle, or needle size to match your yarn Notions: 7 stitch markers Gauge: 17 sts 24 rows / 4 (10cm) stretched. Notes: Pattern: 1 pattern repeat = k2tog, k2, kfb, kfb, k3, ssk Selvedges: \ kfb kfb The pattern does not state any selvedge stitches due to personal preference of each knitter. I have used: S1p for the first stitch and K1tbl for the last stitch of every row. Pattern coding: I have bolded each marker and increase point to make it easier to read a line of pattern. Complete pattern repeats (11 sts) are highlighted in green. Shifting stitches: Since the shawl is knit in two colors, there are ends to weave in at every color section. In order to distribute these ends over both sides of the shawl you shift the stitches to the other end of the circular needle: upon completion of a pattern section in color A, begin with color B on the wrong side (WS) of the piece and, upon completion of the garter stitch section in color B, begin with color A on right side (RS) of the piece. This is also the reason why the garter stitch section is knitted in purl rather than knit stitches (reverse garter). m pm sm m1 K2tog \ Ssk Kfb kfb K1tbl S1p W&t Marker Place marker Slip marker Make 1: k 1 sts from thread between sts Knit 2 stitches together slip 2 stitches as if to knit, then knit those 2 stitches together Increase 1 st by knitting in front and back of st K on RS, p on WS Knit 1 st through back loop Slip 1 st stitch purlwise with yarn in front Wrap & turn, wrap yarn around following stitch, turn work. When knitting across wrapped stitches always pick up the wrap and knit it with the stitch All Rights Reserved. For non-commercial use only. Page 1 of 8

2 Brief instructions: You start knitting the shawl with a section of short rows. From the pattern section onward, there are 2 knit sts on either side of the shawl (or 1 selvedge stitch and a knit stitch) In between are pattern repeats in the following sequence: ---, k1, ---, ---, k1, ---, k1, ---, k1, ---, ---, k1, --- (--- = pattern repeat, k1 = center stitch between increases) The increases are made by m1 on either side of the k1, beginning in the first row of every pattern section and then every fourth row. (Rows 1, 5, (9) of every pattern section). The additional stitches made by the increases are knit in stockinette stitch until there are 11 new stitches between the k1 center stitches and a pattern repeat. Return rows in pattern section are always purled (except 2 edge stitches) The first 6 pattern sections have a total of 6 rows, followed by one with 8 rows, one with 10 rows and one with 12 rows. The garter stitch sections in between are 4 rows wide. Cast-on and Short row section With color B, cast-on 33 sts, knit 1 row.
