Gardner Materials (based on a 3-oz, 197-yard skein): Mittens: 1.75 oz knitting worsted Gloves: 1.85 oz knitting worsted Fingerless gloves: 1.55 oz knitting worsted or 50 gr where 50 g = 98 yards Topless Mittens: 1.65 oz knitting worsted 2 Tops and 2 Toppers:.8 oz knitting worsted Mittens: 1.75 oz knitting worsted Double pointed needles, US sizes 5 and 7, or size to obtain gauge. Cable needle Gauge: 22 stitches = 4" in stockinette stitch Cable Stitch Round 1: P3, slip 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold in back, k2, knit the 2 stitches on the cable needle, slip next 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold in front of work, k2, k the 2 stitches on the cable needle, p3. Round 2 4: Knit Repeat these 4 rounds for cable. Follow the directions for both Mittens and Gloves. (Glove changes are noted in parentheses.) A variation of the topless mittens and fingerless gloves is to make the pair with thumbs and not make the thumb toppers. Left Glove: Cast on 40 stitches with smaller needles. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 15 rows. (Gloves: K1, P1 ribbing) Fingerless Gloves and Topless Mittens Revision 2 Page 1 of 10

Left Thumb Gusset: Continue to work the cable pattern between the stitch markers as you complete the following rounds. First round of gusset: K1, increase one stitch by working P1, K1 in the next stitch, increase one stitch by working K1, P1 in the next stitch. Work to end of (See directions at end of pattern for increase illustration.) Second round of gusset: K1, P1, K2, P1, work to end of Third round of gusset: K1, P1,*increase one stitch in the next stitch by knitting in the loop under the stitch and then knitting in the stitch on the needle, repeat from * once, P1, work to the end of the Fourth round of gusset: K1, P1, K4, P1, work to end of Fifth round of gusset: K1, P1, increase 1 stitch in the next stitch, K2, increase 1 stitch in the next stitch, P1, work to the end of the Repeat the last 2 rounds increasing as every other round until there are 16 knit stitches of gusset between the purl stitches. End with the increase Next Round: K2, place the 16 gusset stitches on a stitch holder, work to end of Continue knitting 6 (Gloves: 8 rounds) more rounds keeping the cable pattern between the stitch markers. Go to Full Mittens to make a regular mitten. If making gloves, go to Index Finger, otherwise continue. Change to smaller needles and work in P2, K2 ribbing for 3/4". Fingerless Gloves and Topless Mittens Revision 2 Page 2 of 10 Finishing the Gusset With larger needles, place the 16 stitches on holder on to three of the needles. Work one row even. With smaller needles, work K2, P2 ribbing for 3 rounds. Bind off in ribbing. Right Glove Cast on 40 stitches with smaller needles. Work in K2, P2 (Gloves: K1, P1) ribbing for 15 rows. Finishing the Gusset With larger needles, place the 16 stitches on holder on to three of the needles. Work one row even. With smaller needles, work K2, P2 (Gloves: K1, P1) ribbing for 3 rounds. Full Thumb (right and left thumbs are worked in the same manner) Work in stockinette stitch for 3 rounds on 16 stitches. Next round: (K6, K2 tog) twice.
