Introduction Social work organizations play a very important role in society as they train personnel who man agencies undertaking social development. Social development has ranked high on the priority list of Government programmes since Independence, and social organizations have been important partners in reaching services to the community, revealing social problems that exist at the grass roots level, and providing training to students. Being in close proximity to the community, these organizations have done pioneering work in many areas, rendered services, drawn the attention of society and government to burning social issues, undertaken advocacy, conducted action research programmes and evaluated the functioning of many Government programmes for the under privileged. A Project was undertaken by Documentation Centre for Women and Child (DCWC), NIPCCD to bring out Directories of Organizations undertaking research, training and building the capacity of organizations by providing support. Social work education departments/ schools are working in many areas, namely health; nutrition; child rights and protection; social welfare; women s empowerment; children at risk, including street children and child labour; social defence, including trafficking; human development and education; scheduled castes/ scheduled tribes; and rural development. This Directory gives detailed information about social work departments/ schools and their activities, including postal address, telephone, fax, website, e-mail address, and key words indicating their areas of work and activities. For the convenience of users, organizations in the Directory have been arranged alphabetically state-wise. It has been possible to bring out this document due to the extensive cooperation extended by organizations that have shared the relevant information with us. Without their support it would not have been possible to bring out this compilation. It is hoped that this document would be useful to all stakeholders working for the empowerment of vulnerable sections of society.
