29-30 4 2010, ATHENS Primary Immunodeficiencies, Paediatric Immunology welcome Dear Colleagues and Friends, The immune system is the key defence system that provides to our body efficient, self limited defence against any invader, while preserving tolerance to self. A defect or inadequate function of it leads to disease. Clinical Immunology is the speciality of medicine, which, through the observation and study of patients, contributes to the identification of the immune system s components, and allows us to learn how it addresses its environment and which are the most effective treatments. A leading role in this field is played by primary immunodeficiencies (PID), which form the core of Paediatric Immunology. Main and most known clinical manifestations of PID are the infections, but not rarely, they are presented as allergic or autoimmune diseases, leukaemia, or lymphomas. Because of their biomedical importance, they have been characterised as in vivo experiments of nature with a unique contribution to medical science and development of new therapeutic approaches. They are classified as rare diseases, but appear more often than we think and can appear during childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. Tool for better understanding these diseases is the patients registry. Awareness on diagnosis of PIDs leads to early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention on time, with great efficacy on patients and families quality of life. Following the 55 years of Primary Immunodeficiencies Symposium, held in 2007, we welcome you to the 2nd Symposium for Primary Immunodeficiencies and Paediatric Immunology, to be held in Aegli Zappiou,, 29-30 April 2010. Distinguished Speakers from International Centres will inform us about the latest developments in research at diagnostic and therapeutic level. Your presence, our honour. Welcome, Maria G. Kanariou Life is short, [the] art long, opportunity fleeting, experience misleading and judgment difficult Hippocrates, Aphorism 1.1 5
