The Outsiders 350 points Basic Level = 20 pts Name Required: While reading The Outsiders, students must complete SSR logs. I expect the entire document to be filled out completely. If you need to read or listen to the novel at home, you can access it on Moodle. Go to Pathfinder's Home page, quick links, Moodle, and then log in. Enrollment key: english AFTER READING--CHOICES Basic Level-- 20 points You must choose ONE of the following assignments in EACH category. All worksheets are to be done INDEPENDENTLY. All answers must be in complete sentences. Intermediate Level= 30 points Choose 1! All projects must be done on the computer and in final form. When choosing projects, choose ones that you will do well on. Artistic ability and professionalism are included in grade. 1. Design a new and different book cover for the novel. Must include a front picture with title and author and a 3-paragraph book summary on the back. 2. Write a 5 paragraph editorial to the local newspaper persuading all teachers that students must read The Outsiders and why. (Must use editorial format in the newspaper) 3. Research teen violence via the Internet. Create a power point illustrating the following: 3 statistics regarding teen violence, 5 causes of teen violence, 3 things that might prevent teen violence, and 5 warning signs that violence might occur among specific teens or groups of teens. 4. Write a 3-paragraph movie review with a listing of cast members from today s society. Must use examples from the newspaper. Design a poster of a billboard advertising The Outsiders movie with new current cast members. 5. Write a 5-paragraph article for a local newspaper covering the events of the story. You must include a headline, the who, what, when, where, and how, use full names, ages, occupations, and at least 1 short quote. Read an article in the newspaper for an example. 6. Construct a model of a scene from The Outsiders and write a 3-paragraph essay describing the events of the scene. 7. Construct a school yearbook with individual and group pictures of all the characters in the novel. Must include a written physical description of each character, what activities they participate in, etc. 8. Write a comic book with pictures and words about the theme of friendship within the novel. Must have a cover with artwork and author. Use Comic Life.

9. Pick 12 significant incidents in the book. Make a timeline with the incidents and a two sentence explanation of why they are important. On the timeline, put the positive incidents towards the top of the paper and the negative incidents toward the bottom. Include a title and 5 illustrations. 10.Create a collage using pictures and images from magazines for ONE of the following: Must be on an 8x10 white paper. There should not be any white showing through. Must have 30 plus pictures. Issues facing teens today Best places to escape bad situations, stress, problems The 1960s Stereotypes 11. Research and define the 5 stages of grief. Make a chart with the 5 stages of grief and then describe Ponyboy s actions as they go through the 5 stages. 12.Illustrate a recruitment poster for the greasers or the Socs. List and illustrate the qualities that the group would want in a new member and list the benefits of belonging to the group. Must be on poster board. 13.Imagine that the Greasers hold several fundraisers to erect a memorial in honor of Johnny Cade s life. Decide where they would place the memorial, and what it would look like. Make a detailed drawing of the monument and include the inscribed wording that would appear. Must be 2 paragraphs in length. Advanced Level= 50 points Choose 1. Name Each option is worth 50 points. All projects must be typed and in final form. Choose 1 project 1. Use imovie to create a 10-minute dialogue of interview questions and answers. Must videotape and act out interview questions and answers. You may work with one partner from your class partners will receive the same grade. You should be interviewing members of the greaser gang asking questions about what it is like to be a member of the gang, how they respond to violence, what they plan to do with their lives, etc. 2. Write a 5-paragraph essay about gangs in the 1950s compared to gangs in 2000s. You must research gangs in the 1950s and gangs in 2000s. You must use 2 Easybib to generate a list of sources and include a work citation page. 3. Write a 50-line poem about a character, the novel, or a scene of the novel. Must illustrate an aspect of the poem. 4. Videotape a 10-minute play of a sequel to the novel using imovie. You may work with one partner from your class partners will receive the same grade. 5. Find 2 articles in a magazine or newspaper that you think would explain a lesson that Ponyboy learned. Provide a 3-paragraph summary of each article, then in a paragraph explain its link to the book. In another paragraph write your opinion as to whether you agree or disagree. (5 paragraphs total) 6. Read another novel by S.E. Hinton, and in chart format, compare it to The Outsiders, focusing on the following literary terms: plot, setting, characters, theme, and conflict. 7. Write a 2-3 typed paged, single space new chapter ending to the novel. Must be believable.

8. Write a 5 paragraph paper about role models. What qualities in a person make him or her a good role model for teens? Compare and contrast good and bad role models that teens have today. You must interview peers about what they think makes a hero, and who their heroes are. Give examples from the media and discuss how the media represents heroes. Is heroism a popularity contest? What happens when a role model does something morally wrong? Do you believe teens today have the right role models? Why or why not? 9. Write a 5 paragraph essay about Robert Frost s poem, Nothing Gold can Stay. You must read the poem and then answer the following questions in your essay: 1. What is the overall message of the poem. 2. Why do you think Ponyboy remembered this poem? 3. Why is this poem important to the meaning of the novel? You must have a creative introduction, a body, and a conclusion. 10.The Outsiders was first published in the late 1960 s. Interview someone for 10 minutes who was a teenager during the 1950s or 1960s and find out what the person did for entertainment. Also discuss what concerns he or she had as a teenager of that era.
