User Guide for App-V Background In order to provide better software service to staff and students, Information Services has implemented a new software provisioning system - Microsoft s Application Virtualization (or App-V for short). APP-V will meet more and more needs on software installation, updates and software uninstall on client PCs. In particular IT Services will centrally manage applications for all uses or particular groups without end user interruptions. What is App-V? App-V is a technology used to deliver software to computers running Windows XP, Vista and 7. App-V is used to deliver software direct to Windows computer systems that have the App-V Client installed without the need for Admin rights for installation. Software will appear under the Application Virtualization folder within your Start Menu as if it were installed locally. Launching software from within this folder will run the software independently of the Operating System, helping to keep the computer faster and free of unwanted system settings. Have I got the App-V Client? The App-V Client has been automatically installed on all the Information Services Campus computers silently. To check if you have the App-V client installed, look under Start\All Programs and check for the existence of the folder Application Virtualization. If the folder does not exist and you believe your machine should have this system installed then you can contact the IT Services (it-services@nottingham.edu.cn or int. 8009). (Windows XP)

(Windows Vista, 7) How do I use App-V? All App-V applications are listed under Start\All Programs\Application Virtualization and can be started like any other application by clicking the icon. There may be a slight delay when you first time launch the application, because it needs to download the software from a central server. When the application is loading a small progress dialogue will be displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. As shown below: When running applications via APP-V it is worth noting that they will run from the Q: drive, instead of the usual C: drive. If you need to access files in the installation folder when

running the application such as example or demonstration files, they will be located in the Q: drive. You can access this within the application through a menu such as File > Open. What is available using App-V? The following software is currently published via App-V: 7-Zip: 7-Zip is a file archive tool with a high compression ratio. It is open source software. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. Supported formats: Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR Unpacking only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z. CAJViewer: This is proprietary software from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) that allows you to view the full-text article. It acts similar to Adobe Acrobat Reader. Mozilla Firefox: FireFox is a web browser created by Mozilla, the original creators of the Netscape series of browsers. Version one was released in November 2004. It quickly gained new fans because of its open source license and multitude of features. Notepad++ This is a text editor and source code editor for Windows, though it can run on Linux and Mac OS X, using software such as Wine. The primary advantage of Notepad++ over the built-in text editor, Notepad, is tabbed editing, to easily work with multiple open files. VLC media player This is a free software media player and multimedia framework written by the VideoLAN project. VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various formats. Xming (For Computer Science Division)
