the beginning
Why Beauty School? Systematically provides a sense and overview of hair Technique & Applicationstrong fundamentals, key to everything you will do as a stylist Theory important to understand the science of what hair can and will do. Practical hands-on with all types of hair. learn a variety of shapes, styles, textures Perfect place to learn your craft before going out into the working world of hair
Why Beauty School? I enhanced my education with a Saturday job in a salon. I got booth experiences from beauty school and a salon; perfect combination! I assisted for 6 months, to continue my experience and convert what I learned at beauty school to the real world of a salon. The reality it was mastering and gathering more experience. Practice, practice, practice! Master the technique, learn to control the technique, and keep your eyes & ears to other methods of doing hair. Then evaluate which is the best, most effective method or technique for you.
WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE? Finding the right salon- look for a salon that has a high standard and reputation. Choose a salon for the next Phase of your career again, continue your education. Departmentalized salons what are these? What are the benefits? Train beyond the 100% so you exceed others.
making the transition
Ask Yourself: Who am I? What do I really want? Where do I want to go? ALWAYS be honest and true to yourself; do not waste time trying to fit into others plans! Re-evaluate over time; as you grow personally & professionally, your goals should too.
Keep moving until you find the right fit After many years of trying to find the right salon, sometimes you have to experience what you don t like to learn what you do like. I eventually learned what felt like the right fit and what did not. My advice, if you re not getting the right training, or feeling great about going to work, you re not being challenged in a positive way to constantly improve your work. Move to a salon that you LOVE! Move on and don t waste time. In the long run it achieves absolutely nothing to linger.
You can t be great at everything (and it s ok!) Are you Jack of all trades, master of nothing? I was! It always shows in the end result if you spread your talent to thin and don t excel in certain areas. It takes time and some soul searching to discover what you truly love doing. Your instincts usually guide you. Tune in to refining the skills you love performing you can t be fabulous at everything. Do what you love with hair. Cutter, colorist, long hair, men s design, etc. Only you can make the right decisions do not allows other to force you to do things you don t like. My advice is find what niche feels right, then do it and do it really well!
The day a hair show changed my life
More Education! At the age of 26, I was working in a salon that was pretty good. I went to a hair show, The Wella Vogue competition. Featuring some iconic hair dressers, one of them Trevor Sorbie. 1 hour out of my normal routine changed my entire life--forever!
Proving Grounds The entry test- one length, layers and graduation. The plan- I was re-learning how to perfect and master the techniques I had always known. Above average was unacceptable. Perfection was the norm and only option. Skill+application+polish+finish = EXPERT! Perfection always shows. Control is the hair controlling me, or am I in charge?! Turning point- My major light bulb moment came a little later in my career. But it s never ever too late!
Education Goal: Be Unique Trevor had a unique vision and philosophy that I had not experienced ever before. There s more to hair than just cutting and coloring; there s more to working in a salon, look at your options and express yourself.
