The characteristics in the Agricultural Census 2010 questionnaire are divided into several parts (I VII): Data on the agricultural holding; Land of the holding; Livestock and poultry; Farm labour force; Other gainful activities of the holding; Support for rural development; Agricultural production methods. The questionnaire has 6 annexes: Annex 1 - Additional census questionnaire (it has to be filled in, if lands and (or) livestock of the holding are in different municipalities); Annex 2 Farm buildings and machines; Annex 3 Small units questionnaire; Annex 4 Causes for the Agricultural Census 2010 questionnaire not being filled in; Annex 5 - Information about the Agricultural Census 2010; Annex 6 Manual for interviewers.
DATA COLLECTION The Census of Agriculture was conducted in May-August 2010. The Census was organized and performed by Statistics Lithuania and Regional Statistical Offices 277,8 thous. agricultural holdings and 178,1 thous. households with land area up to 1 hectare were surveyed by interviewers. All (646) agricultural companies and enterprises were surveyed. 3140 new agricultural holdings were found. In Statistics Lithuania 5 specialists of the FSS and Census Subdivision were assigned to carry out the job related to the Census they were responsible for methodological, technical and organisational preparation of the Census. Also, 57 Census coordinators in district municipalities, 479 senior specialists (interviewers) and 750 specialists (interviewers) worked during the Census. The fieldwork were carried out and data were delivered to Statistics Lithuania for future processing over the period from 3 May to 30 September 2010.

FIELDWORK ARRANGEMENTS (1) (agricultural holdings) Data collection was started with web-census on May-June 2010. At the same time workplaces for the census specialists in every ward office were equipped. According to the intended way of organization of the agricultural census, a computerized workplace for a census specialist were equipped in every ward office, where more than 50 farms are to declare crops, from 3 May 2010. Such workplace were provided with computer and the Internet access. According to the organizational plan, farmers who came to declare crops on 3 May 30 June 2010 were interviewed by census specialist. The census specialist entered the data into the programme in the portable computer. Paper census sheets were not used at this stage.
FIELDWORK ARRANGEMENTS (2) (agricultural holdings) After crop declaration (i.e. interviewing of farmers providing declarations and period for filling of electronic forms), the lists of not interviewed farms were prepared at Statistics Lithuania on 1 9 July. Those who do not answer through web and do not declare crops were investigated by interviewers. The lists of not interviewed farms were sent to the coordinators in districts who together with census specialist working at ward offices distributed workload for census specialist. The interviewing of farms which did not declare crops was started on 19 July at their homes. Paper questionnaires were used. Data of these questionnaires were entered at the same computerized workplaces at ward offices. The interviewing of farms was finished on 31 August 2010. Workplace for census specialist at ward office were equipped on May August 2010 for entering statistical data.
FIELDWORK ARRANGEMENTS (small units) Interviewing of small farms (having up to 1 ha of agricultural land) was started on 1 June. Small farms were interviewed by additional census specialist who will visit farmers at home. Paper questionnaires were provided for small farms. The data of these questionnaires were entered in the same portable computers by the census specialist working at ward offices. The interviewing of small farms was carried out until 16 July.

The greatest decrease was observed: in farms possessing 2 5 ha of agricultural land utilised (against 2003 census data, their number dropped by 37 per cent); in farms possessing 5 10 ha of agricultural land utilised (against 2003 census data, their number dropped by 30 per cent).

Permanent workers were usually hired by large farms. A third (34 per cent) of farmers and contributing family workers indicated that at the moment of the Census, apart from farm work, they had another paid job, of whom 96 per cent stated that another job to be the main one for them.
