Backup and Disaster Recovery Software for Microsoft Windows Servers Five Strategic Considerations Investment Protection For many companies, the life-blood of their business is corporate data. Protecting this investment is a top priority. Reliability If a problem occurs you need to be confident that backups performed are reliable, consistent and fully recoverable. Performance Downtime is a true business cost, and also a window of vulnerability. Outstanding performance of both data protection and recovery is paramount. Comprehensive Package Data protection solutions should address day-to-day operational needs and provide timely recovery from system failure, integrated as one complete package. Customer Oriented Support The solution must be supported by an organization renowned for the delivery of a fast efficient service that exceeds expectations, available 24x7. Racing Ahead of the Pack

UltraBac File by File Backup UltraBac is a multi-award winning, advanced backup software written expressly for the Windows Server environment, which scores highly when under independent assessment. Tests by publications such as Windows NT and BackOffice magazine rated UltraBac as the fastest backup product available when compared to other solutions. UltraBac has also received acclaim for its ease of use and quick installation. As a highly modular product UltraBac provides license options for protection of a single workstation through to a total enterprise server environment. The developers of UltraBac have always been at the leading edge when introducing new groundbreaking technology. UltraBac was the first to introduce open shared file backup, hive level registry backup, Microsoft Exchange Agent and Microsoft Cluster compatibility. A continual program of enhancements and new product features supports any investment made in UltraBac. Performance The performance of UltraBac is outstanding for both store and restore. Tests at Microsoft and other independent sources have shown UltraBac to significantly out-perform other solutions. In some cases UltraBac was shown to be over 40% faster. As an option, for enhanced performance, backups can be written to both local or network disks and then copied to tape at some later date. When recovery is made from tape UltraBac s unique Express Index technology facilitates rapid data positioning on tape for immediate recovery. Reliable and secure: E-mail notification of backup events 32bit tape verification Automatic backup of open shared files Device failure redirection Detailed registry protection Exceptional store and restore performance Reliability, Security & Administration When considering any backup solution, reliability and security of data placement must be a high priority. UltraBac provides advanced features to enable lights-out operations in the knowledge that backups are being performed successfully. UltraBac provides as standard open shared file inclusion, registry protection, device failure re-direction and fully automated on demand 32bit CRC tape verification. Easy to administer: Integrated service-based scheduler Centralized administration of backups on multiple servers Integration with de-fragmentation and AntiVirus tools Microsoft Cluster UltraBac gives the System Administrator an enhanced set of facilities through which to manage the backup process. These include centralised management software, a service-based scheduler for high level security or alternatively command line operation for integration with MS Cluster Server compatible Live Backup and restore of a live cluster server other schedulers. It further offers e-mail notification of numerous defined backup events, supports all known Windows Server devices and integrates with other solutions to provide de-fragmentation and anti-virus protection. AutoChanger robotic support SANs/NAS support Tape drive cascading Software RAIT speed / recoverability Enterprise Environments & Tape Library Support UltraBac is fully scalable and can provide for enhanced data and system protection for enterprise installations, running into thousands of servers. Large installations require high speed, high capacity tape libraries with integrated robotics, possibly utilising SANs or NAS. These features are fully supported by UltraBac. Timely

Comprehensive Data Protection recovery of individual files from a large system backup on high capacity DLT or QIC multi track tape devices can be a problem. Testing has conclusively proven that UltraBac s unique Express Index technology can reduce restore times on these types of backup devices from hours to minutes. A further enhancement of multiple tape handling is UltraBac s ability to provide RAID to tape (RAIT). This enables the software to write to multiple tapes seen as a single device with various levels of RAIT parity. If one device fails, depending upon the level of RAIT used, UltraBac will automatically enable recovery from another device in the backup tapeset. Application Server Support The standard edition of UltraBac supports backup of all static file types within a Windows Server environment. However, for specific applications such as those that require online 24x7 availability, UltraBac provides Live Backup Agents for Exchange, Microsoft SQL and Oracle. Live Backup of other applications that require 24x7 can Exchange SQL Oracle be facilitated by UltraBac s unique Locked-File Agent or by integration with St Bernards Open File Manager. Single Mailbox Recovery Specific Live Backup Agents are available for Exchange, SQL and Oracle. For Live Backup of generic files there is a Locked-File Agent, or integration with St Bernards OFM Solution. Exchange UltraBac provides a clean and easy procedure to recover an individual mailbox that may have become damaged or corrupted. This facility allows recovery of a single message, folder or entire mailbox. Additional Platform Support Single Mailbox Recovery for Exchange Novell Linux Sun Solaris / HP-UX / AIX / FreeBSD UltraBac provides backup agents to allow Open Systems platforms including Linux, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and FreeBSD to be backed up to the UltraBac server. A full UltraBac agent for Novell Netware is also available. The implementation of UltraBac s Agents has been designed to ensure the highest level of throughput across a network. The Agent achieves this by compressing data on the host prior to transfer to the UltraBac server and can be Agents for Novell / Linux / Sun Solaris / HP-UX / AIX / FreeBSD Servers scheduled for lights-out operations using the integrated scheduler software provided as standard within UltraBac. Client & Server Support Clients: 95,98,ME or any Windows NT / 2000 Workstation or Server UltraBac supports all common clients and servers used within a Windows Server environment including 95, 98, ME, and NT / 2000 workstations and servers with development ongoing as new versions are released. UltraBac has fully network compatible editions, that enable any number of networked clients or servers to be backed up. Summary Although UltraBac file-by-file is in its own right an industry leading data protection solution for any commercial Windows Server environment, it is only part of a complete solution. UltraBac s Disaster Recovery module compliments UltraBac file-by-file, thus enabling UltraBac to deliver a comprehensive solution covering both day-to-day operational requirements and enhanced recovery of failed or damaged systems.

UltraBac Disaster Recovery All computer systems have the potential to fail regardless of the protection and procedures put in place to avoid this. System downtime is a true business cost, for many an unacceptable cost. Solutions must be in place that afford high levels of recovery to ensure that the impact of a failed system is minimal to a company. UltraBac provides a number of methods by which a failed Windows Server or Workstation can be recovered, often in minutes depending upon the nature of the failure. Image Disaster recovery, as a technique, is an essential requirement of any environment serious about a rapid recovery of a fatally crippled system. The use of Image technology as part of a regular data protection program can avoid significant delays in the initiation of a recovery procedure. Image technology by design performs a raw backup of an entire system, drive or partition including data, structures, applications, securities, permissions and registries, in fact it represents a mirror image of a system, at a given time. A raw backup is a procedure that transfers data from disk to tape or another local or network disk, which by-passes the operating system, and all the overhead restrictions this enforces. When performing an Image store or restore (compared to a file-by-file procedure) performance will be significantly faster. Image recovery can be initiated immediately, without the prior need to re-install an operating system, manually format or re-partition a disk. UltraBac provides a highly flexible and adaptable set of procedures through which Image can be deployed and recovery achieved. Outlined below is an overview of some, but not all the options available in using UltraBac Disaster Recovery. 1. Recovery from Tape The System Drive in the Live Server has failed UltraBac provides a number of Recovery Options. Server have been performed to tape. Should one of the disks fail, the Live Server can be re-started from pre-created Universal Boot Floppies / CD (or direct from the tape using HP s OBDR capability) and the failed disk recovered from tape. 2. Recovery from a Network Drive Server have been performed over the Network to disks on the Backup Server. Should a disk Live Server 1. Recovery from Tape Backup Server on the Live Server fail it can be re-started from a pre-created, network enabled DOS diskette and the failed disk recovered from the image on the Backup Server. 3. Recovery from Alternative Local Disk Server have been performed to other disks in the same system. Should one of the main 3. Recovery from Alternative Local Disk Master Boot Record 2. Recovery from a Network Disk 4. Recovery of Whole Physical Disk, Individual Partitions, or just the Master Boot Record, from 1, 2 or 3 disks fail, it may be recovered from one of the Image disks, or depending on the method used the Live system may be directed to the boot path of the Image disk instead of the failed disk. 4. Recovery of Whole Disk, Partition, or MBR Using any of the above three methods a whole physical disk, individual partitions, or even just the Master Boot Record can be recovered.

UltraBac Disaster Recovery Single File Recovery Normally when using Image, recovery would be on either a system or multipartitional basis. By inference this would be expected, as you would normally recover an Image as part of a full disaster recovery scenario. However, UltraBac Image does provide the facility to recover a single file or group of files without the need for a global recovery. This is achieved by mounting a tape containing an Image backup as if it were a removable drive. Once mounted files can be restored by dragging and dropping specified files into the original or an alternative location. Recovery of this nature is not as fast as UltraBac fileby-file restore. For companies that are cost sensitive, who have no requirement for network client backups, live backups, or any other UltraBac file-by-file feature and if the extended restore time for individual files or directories can be accepted, UltraBac Disaster Recovery is a standalone backup solution. 1. Mount tape containing Image backup (i.e. of drive C:) as a removable disk (drive E:) 2. Drag and Drop (or Copy and Paste) files from mounted tape (drive E:) back to the original or alternative location Static Mirror Using this facility UltraBac can perform a full or partial Image backup to a disk that is located on the same system as the source. If a regular out-ofhours Image backup were performed between two disks a vital disaster recovery disk would always be available. In the event that corruption or failure occurs in the main disk, a simple procedure is required that would allow the system to boot from the Static Mirror disk. UltraBac Static Mirroring can be used in parallel with real-time mirroring as an added level of protection. This can be useful as the Static Mirror is taken at a clean point in time when no users or applications are in use. Should a corruption be caused by an operational or software error it is possible that a real-time mirror disk (or system) will also become corrupted. In this situation the Static Mirror would not be affected and can therefore be used to reboot the system and make the server available again as quickly as possible. Stand Alone or Integrated Disaster Recovery UltraBac Disaster Recovery can be purchased as a stand-alone module to run alongside any existing third party backup software. However, as a total package UltraBac Disaster Recovery integrates fully with UltraBac file-by-file. As an example, it is a simple operation for UltraBac to perform a number of Image backups to a tape and then once completed call UltraBac file-by-file and have these backups appended to the tape. This is the optimal procedure covering operational needs and disaster recovery planning in a single pass. By integrating UltraBac Disaster Recovery Image backups comprehensive protection is provided on a single tapeset.
