SESSION I (Duration: Approximately 100 minutes/ Total 60 pts.) A. LISTENING COMPREHENSION (30 items - 1 pt. each; total 30 pts.; approximately 30 mins) PART 1 - Various Situations In this part you will hear 6 different short dialogues or monologues and a question related to each dialogue or monologue. You will listen to each of them only ONCE. Before you listen to each dialogue or monologue, you will be given 10 seconds in order to read the three alternatives to the question. You are required to mark the best alternative after listening to each situation. You will read: 1. You hear a man and woman talking. Where does the conversation take place? A) in an office B) at a train station C) in Mr. Zeng s office You will hear: Man: Have you delivered those files to Jim Zeng? Woman: Yes. Just ten minutes ago. I left them with his secretary since he was in a meeting. Man: OK. Thanks. I have a train to catch, so I had better leave now. Woman: When will you be back at the office? Man: I should be back early next week. Monday I hope. Oh, I really have to run now. It s 3 o clock and the train leaves at 3.20. The correct answer is (A).

PART 2 - Dialogue In this part you will hear a dialogue with 7 questions. You will listen to it only ONCE. Before you listen, you will be given 90 seconds to look at the questions and alternatives. You are required to mark the best alternative after listening to the dialogue. You will read: 7. Monica says that most people who buy her book. A) have made mistakes in gardening B) are knowledgeable about gardening C) do not trust professional gardeners You will hear: You will hear an interview with Monica Darcey, who has written a bestselling book about gardening ONCE. Listen and for questions 7-13 on your optic form mark the alternative (A, B or C) that best completes the statements or answers the questions. Interviewer: Monica, welcome to the programme. Your book Make Your Garden Unique has been a great success. But why would people want to buy a book about gardening instead of just buying some plants and putting them in the ground? Monica Darcey: Hello! Well, yes, I think that s what most people do when they move into a place, there s often little time to think. Lots of readers have written to me saying that they had gone to a garden centre, spent a lot of money on seeds and plants, with not very good results. In fact I think people with that sort of experience make up the majority of my readers! Interviewer: So, how did your interest in gardening start? Were your parents keen gardeners? Monica Darcey:... The correct answer is (A)

PART 3 - Multi-speaker Conversation In this part, you will hear a multi-speaker conversation with 7 questions. You will listen to it only ONCE. Listen and on your optic form, mark the alternative (A, B or C) that best completes the statements or answers the questions.... Administrator: Well, one game I'm really excited about is for kids with diabetes. You know how hard it is to get kids to test their blood sugar? Well, this game makes it fun. The test is a part of the game - in the game, the kid with diabetes is a superhero whose powers get stronger every time he checks his blood sugar. So he gets a reward for doing something that kids with diabetes usually hate doing. That's just one example of how you use a game to motivate kids to follow your instructions - and to be healthy. Dr. Joe: Actually, I think that sounds like a great idea. I see a lot of kids with diabetes, and it's so hard to get them to do what they need to do to stay healthy. After all, their lives aren't easy - what kid wants to watch what they eat...and prick themselves with a needle? I'm all for anything that can make these poor kids' lives more fun. Dr. Brenda: Well, I can see how things might work hard with kids, but most of us work with adults.... The correct answer is (C).
