CALL FOR PAPERS CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES The ISC20C - International Scientific Committee on 20th Century Heritage of ICOMOS in association with the Campus Internacional de Excelencia Moncloa - Cluster de Patrimonio, with the collaboration of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid () organize the first International Scientific Conference celebrated in Spain regarding Approaches for the Intervention in the Architectural Heritage of the 20th Century. The conference, which will include prominent architects as keynote speakers will take place in ETSA Madrid, the 14th, 15th and 16th of June 2011, and will follow the ISC20C scientific meeting on the 13 th of June, which will assemble leading international conservation practitioners to contribute to the conference debate and public discussion. The aims of the conference are to call the attention to the growing recognition of the value of the twentieth century heritage and to consider the resulting conservation, protection and management issues relating to this important heritage resource. The lack of recognition and identification and the lack of technical knowledge and public affection suffered by the 20th century architectural heritage is acknowledged, and the speed of change and growth that characterizes contemporary societies make this sector of architectural heritage specially vulnerable and threatened. Many of its most remarkable and admired works have already disappeared in the last decades. It is a heritage in danger, and it is timely to consider whether existing heritage management guidelines and processes need expansion to meet the needs of the architectural heritage of the twentieth century, particularly in regard to approaches to interventions. Consideration of these matters has led to a staged process of meetings and international discussion to reflect on experience world-wide. Whilst the heritage components of the twentieth century are varied, including buildings, parks, gardens, industries and technologies, the focus of the Madrid meeting will be on architectural heritage. The ISC20C has initiated the preparation of a short document which will be circulated prior to the conference for discussion in Madrid, and input from conference participants and speakers will be an important contribution to this process from an architectural perspective. The "Madrid Document", will be discussed during the conference and presented at the final session. This will lay the groundwork necessary for the development of good approches for conserving 20 th century architectural heritage. The conference will include a series of lecturers of great international relevance in architectural intervention, who will present recent trends and case studies in twentieth century architectural heritage identification and recognition and approaches to conservation and intervention. Principles and examples and will be discussed with the participants in order to consider international experience. The conferences, lectures and selected communications will be published by the Ministry for Culture of Spain, together with text of the Madrid Document. TOPICS T1 Topic 1-14th of June "Identification and recognition of the 20th century architectural heritage" The significance of the architectural heritage of the twentieth century is still a subject of debate and controversy. Because of its newness, often experimental materials and technology and the fact that in many cases it is still used for its original function, its conceptualization as valuable heritage worthy of public recognition and protection remains vague and controversial. Historical context and comparative analysis is needed to identify a typology of styles and historical themes which characterise the development of the century. The opening day of the conference is dedicated to discussing the scope of the concept of twentieth century architectural heritage, which involves reviewing the history, impact and values of the various social and architectural trends and methods for identification and recognition of significant buildings. T2 Topic 2-15th of June "Approaches to the conservation and protection of the 20th century architectural heritage" The documentation and protection of significant twentieth century buildings is still incomplete, erratic, and thus subject to continuous disputes. Therefore, the second day of the conference is dedicated to the identification and review of international approaches to the conservation, protection and management of twentieth century architectural heritage, in order to meet its specific characteristics.
T3 Topic 3-16th of June "Approches to intervention in the 20th century architectural heritage" The intervention concentrates all the previous work of conceptualization, historical research and establishment of guidelines for the treatment of twentieth century architectural heritage, and it must also be compatible with contemporary architectural language of its expansions. Although currently we have a very respectable number of examples of interventions of all kinds and of varying success, there is no general agreement about the validity of the used approaches for a heritage that has its own distinctive character. The third day of the conference is devoted to examining the situation in this regard and trying to establish an agreement on essential approches. The previously circulated draft Madrid Document will be finalised as a contribution to the ongoing process of discussion and international debate. MADRID DOCUMENT Among the major objectives of this conference is to lay the groundwork necessary for the development of approches for conserving 20 th century architectural heritage commencing with the "Madrid Document", which will provide the broad starting point for approaches for intervention in the 20th century architectural heritage. Before the beginning of the conference and in order to inform all participants, the text of the "Madrid Document", which will be presented and discussed during the conference, will be distributed. The conference will conclude with the reading of the final text, prior to the process that will ultimately lead to its submission to ICOMOS more generally. SEATS will take place in the morning in the auditorium of - Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in the Ciudad Universitaria of Madrid. Lectures and debates will take place in the afternoon in three venues: T1 Residencia de Estudiantes T2 CaixaForum T3 Círculo de Bellas Artes PAPER PRESENTATION AND SELECTION A scientific paper is the chosen format for papers.
