As owner of DEO Records & Productions, Ms.Ortiz s responsibilities include marketing, bidding, contracting and researching within the convention service industry. She has traveled extensively around the world contracting with the Department of Defense Professional Overseas Shows and recently completed a trip to the Middle East, Russia and the Mediterranean. In addition to running her business, she is currently a full time faculty member for Paradise Valley Community College Business Department. We will analyze basic principals of marketing. Topics include the impact of external forces on marketing decisions; strategies; marketing aspects of business ethics and social responsibilities; and global marketing. Course Standards Paradise Valley Community College trusts students to maintain high standards of honesty and ethical behavior. All assignments submitted in fulfillment of course requirements must be the student s own work. All assignments except those designated as groups are meant to be individual efforts. Group effort means equal effort of all group members. It is assumed that student will perform professionally in preparing work required for class. All papers must be submitted on their due date. All documents are to be typed, spell checked, grammar checked, submitted double space. Students are welcome to use any software program to prepare for assignments. LATE PAPERS ARE NOT ACCEPTED, PERIOD. If you are going to be absent for any reason, please forward your paper to my email on or before the due date. I suggest you add the following two sites to your bookmarks (for Netscape) or favorites (for Internet Explorer) list so you can go to the sites quickly. BlackBoard Class Login: http://bb.dist.maricopa.edu/ WinZip. This neat little program will compress or zip your files or uncompress your files. You can get a free evaluation copy at http://www.winzip.com NOTE: You will be posting files and sending files to one another and me during this course. NEVER send or receive files without having a current, up-to-date virus checker operating on your computer! Both Norton (http://www.symantec.com) and McAfee (http://www.mcafee.com/) make good virus checkers. Any file sent me with a virus will be deleted, unopened and ungraded. So, it is in your best interests to use a virus checker. Computer Software Needs: You will need regular access to a PC Windows-based computer and MS PowerPoint, word and excel (for charts). Whether that is at work, home, or in the PVCC computer lab, it doesn t matter. YOU are responsible to turn in the material when it is due. One of the first things you must do within BlackBoard is click on TOOLS and complete EDIT YOUR HOMEPAGE and PERSONAL INFORMATION. The personal information area is where you will put in your working email address. This is an alternate way I have to communicate with you. If you change your email address during the term, you must go back and change it within PERSONAL INFORMATION. To make your email visible to us, make sure you do not check the privacy setting. If you miss something, you are still responsible for it. If you take off for that extended four week tour of the continent with your relatives, YOU are still responsible to participate in the class and send in the material ON TIME. I have often gone on vacation AND kept up with teaching or taking an online course. It is possible. It really isn t that hard. However, if you must be gone for any length of time, you might consider retaking the course when you can give your all to it. Make friends in here. I encourage students to learn from the text, from each other, and maybe even from me. Do not rely on me to re-lecture or re-explain material I have already covered. It s hard to participate in class if you aren t logging in! On emailing me: Sometimes you might need to email me, whether it is to send a zipped group assignment or ask a question. ALWAYS include your FULL NAME and section number of your class. For instance, CIS 105 #5571. #5571 is an example of a section number. Plagiarism. Plagiarism is stealing somebody else s writing or ideas and not giving him or her proper credit. This is wrong. In the past, students who have plagiarized have received punishments ranging from failing the assignment in question, failing the course, all the way to being expelled from the college. Hint: DO YOUR OWN WORK! Attendance/Withdrawal It is your responsibility to become familiar with PVCC s drop/add policy. I do not withdraw students from my courses for non-participation and I do not assign I s or incompletes. If you stop participating in class, you must complete an official withdrawal form through PVCC or you will receive an F for the class. I WILL, however, drop you from BlackBoard after the second week of class for nonparticipation. In Case BlackBoard Goes Down It is rare, but sometimes the server that hosts BlackBoard crashes. The PVCC Center for Distance Learning is always a good contact. Unless I instruct you otherwise, do not submit work to me via email. We will all weather the storm and resume when the server is back up. I do not penalize for late postings if there is a server crash. Just continue your work and we ll resume when it comes up. Remember the login instructions I asked you to print out? At the bottom is a contact name if you have problems. PARTICIPATION Each week you will be expected to contribute to the class discussion in a meaningful way by posting, answering and responding to your classmate s discussion questions (DQs) M-TH using the Discussion Board. The DQs will be posted Friday of every week on the Discussion Board. Your input to the discussions must relate to the subject material for the week. Discussions will take place in the class meeting and in your groups. If possible, relate your "real world" experiences to the subject matter of the class. Not participating in a meaningful way will result in a reduction of attendance/participation points. Fall 2003 4
COURSE STANDARDS Students are graded on achievement rather than on effort. It is the responsibility of the student to be prepared for each workshop. The college trusts each student to maintain high standards of honesty and ethical behavior. All the work submitted by a student must represent the student's original endeavor. Where outside sources are used as references, work submitted by the student should identify the source and make clear the extent to which the source has been used. Ideas or work presented in the private or public forums of the Online electronic classroom are subject to the same standards of honesty. The University considers plagiarism and falsification of documents, including documents submitted to the University for other than academic work, a serious matter that may result in the following sanctions: 1. Warning - notice given orally or in writing that any further misconduct may result in more serious discipline. 2. Forfeiture - loss of all or part of the credit for work conducted in association with academic dishonesty. 3. Suspension - separation from the University for a specified period of time. 4. Expulsion - permanent separation from the University. It is assumed that students will perform professionally in preparing work required for this class. All papers must be submitted on their due date. All formal papers are to be typed, spell checked and submitted double-spaced. ACADEMIC HONESTY Academic honesty is highly valued in the Online environment. A student must always submit work that represents his or her original words or ideas. If any words or ideas are used that do not represent the student's original words or ideas, the student must cite all relevant sources. The student should also make it clear the extent to which such sources were used. Words or ideas that require citation include, but are not limited to, all hardcopy or electronic publications, whether copyrighted or not, and all verbal or visual communication when the content of such communication clearly originates from an identifiable source. At the Online campus, all submissions to any public meeting or private mailbox fall within the scope of words and ideas that require citations if used by someone other than the original author. Academic dishonesty in an Online learning environment could involve: 1. Having a tutor or friend complete a portion of your assignments Fall 2003 5

BASIS FOR EVALUATION The evaluation of your performance is related to your demonstration of the course outcomes through your individual and group work. Again, group interaction is evaluated on the quantity and quality of responses to the faculty member and fellow students. You are expected to be an active member of the class, contribute new and relevant information to the discussion, comment in a positive manner, and build on the remarks of fellow students. Individual work will be graded on its relevance to the assignment, comprehensives of information presented, specificity of application, clarity of reporting, and the analytical skills utilized.
