TANZANIA GAME RESERVES Serengeti Plains The Serengeti is Tanzania s best known game reserve and covers and enormous area about the size of Connecticut. It contains a vast quantity and variety of wildlife and in particular is home to the huge numbers of wildebeest and zebra. January is an ideal time to see the great migration as it is assembled on the plains in the South of the Serengeti and North of the Ngorongoro Conservation area, giving birth to their young. This event also attracts many predators. Ngorongoro Crater The Ngorongoro Crater is as equally famous as the Serengeti and is the world s largest intact Caldera, which is a collapsed volcano. This is a relatively small area, but it contains a large amount and variety of wildlife, including rhinos, which are rarely seen in the wild elsewhere, and has a lake that attracts flamingos and has hippo pools. Lake Manyara Lake Manyara Park is a small park, about half of which is the lake itself. This park is often underrated, but it contains a wonderful variety of habitats and wildlife. There is a groundwater forest, jungle- like part of the park, together with open plains areas. There are tree-climbing lions in this park, which are a remarkable sight if you are lucky enough to spot them. The lake itself is a soda lake and home to flamingos and a vast number of other bird species. Tarangire Park This park is a good size reserve with a permanent water source and has excellent game viewing particularly in dry season months. It is lower lying than the Serengeti and has swamp areas and the landscape contains a large number of Baobab trees, which gives it a unique appearance. The largest herds of elephants in East Africa are found in Tarangire which has also a good quantity and variety of other wildlife.
Accommodations: Safari accommodations in Tanzania are generally high, as is the level of service and food. The lodges and camps suggested on these itineraries are excellent quality and all rooms have en suite facilities. Every effort will be made to provide preferred accommodations; however, some flexibility may be necessary particularly where bookings are made at a later date. In most places rooms are available as double or twin rooms, and triple rooms are also available where required. Individuals requiring a single room can book on this basis subject to a single supplement, and arrangements can also be made for two single delegates to share a twin room if they are on the same departure and wish to do so. Vehicles: The vehicles used by the local operator are 4 x 4 stretch Landrovers or Landcruisers with 7 window seats. No more than 6 individuals will be booked on any one vehicle. Each vehicle comes with a highly-trained, experienced and professional driver/guide, who is fluent in English. Balloon safaris: A balloon safari is available as an optional extra on itineraries that include the Serengeti. It is not necessary for all members of any group to book this activity, since the ones taking the balloon do so in the early morning and re-join the others in the mid-morning.
