Principio di Funzionamento PCI Design Guide Because human body is a conductor, when a human finger approaches an electrode of Projected Capacitive Input (PCI) touch screen, the capacitance between that finger and the electrode will be changed, which makes it possible for controller to locate the touch position by finding out which line has capacitance change. Theoretically the operation force for projected capacitive touch screen is zero because the changes of capacitance can be detected when a conductor close enough to its surface. In addition, the surface material for PCI touch screens is glass, which is highly scratch-resistant, durable, and reliable under harsh environment. Since the capacitance will not change when an insulator approaches a PCI touch screen, this means that one can not activate projected capacitive touch with non-conducting object. The operation theory of a PCI touch screen is that, under the cover glass substrate, there are two patterned ITO layers which create X-axis and Y-axis electric field. These electric fields will project above the glass surface between adjacent ITO traces. Once a finger approaches the glass surface, a new balance of electric field will be established between the finger and the corresponding X-axis and Y-axis. The controller IC will locate the ITO traces which have capacitance changes to pinpoint the finger touch accurately.
