In continuance of the sequel, three Police Training programs of two days each were executed in this quarter. Each program consisted of 50 Police officers included Inspector to Assistant Sub Inspector ranks.. DFPF organized these programs in collaboration with the Police Training School Garden Range, Karachi. Each program empowered the participants with information and knowledge about strategies that can be implemented for reducing drug abuse and its related crimes. The course outline delivered to trainees included: Understanding the concepts of Drug Demand Reduction, Treatment and Handling of Addicts in Custody, Relationship of Crimes and Drugs, Assessment of drug Problem in the region, Risk & Protective factors related to drug Abuse, Community Mobilization, Communication Skills, Personal Skills (Self Awareness & Stress Management) and Study Visit to Drug Treatment Centre NHCC. The series empowered 105 Police Officials in Drug Demand Reduction whereas, informational posters regarding handling of drug addicts in custody were also provided to the officers. for more infor mation Page # 1 www.drugfreepakistan.com
Shaheed Naveed Younus Cricket Club Tournament Projection of Sports as an Anti Drug In order to promote a drug free life style, Shaheed Naveed Younus Center has taken an initiative of establishing the Shaheed Naveed Younus Sports Club where annually a large number of sports events are organized on institutional and community level. In the first phase, Shaheed Naveed Younus Center (SNYC) Organized a Cricket tournament to promote the concept of sports as means of leading a healthy Drug Free Life to the general public. This tournament was initiated by the local team of Shaheed Naveed Younus Cricket Club (SNYCC) and local cricket clubs of Karachi. Team SNYCC comprised of recovering drug addicts being treated at our Rehab center. The tournament was of a knockout nature where overall 26 local club teams competed against each other and eliminated the opponent team in each match. Team SNYCC and local team of Pakistani Club made it to the final held on 11th December 2011 where Team of Pakistani Club won the match by a close margin. The guests of honors appreciated this inventive approach of SNYC and pledged to support such healthy activities to their best. Various informative banners, standees and pamphlets were placed in the surroundings to deliver short messages and quotations to motivate the spectators for our cause. The tournament lasted for one month and was appreciated by community stakeholders from all walks of life. Shaheed Naveed Younus Sports Club holds to organize more sports events in different schools, colleges and Universities to promote the concept of Sports as an Anti Drug. Page # 2 New Generations Sports Day Olympiad Projection of Sports as an Anti Drug Drug Free Pakistan Foundation promotes the concept of Sports as a means of keeping away from drug abuse at all forums. For this purpose, DFPF organized a one day Sports Olympiad with New Generations School on 11th December 2012. Young students actively participated to deliver their message for a drug free life to the general audience. Youth numbering around 1000 participated in the event whereas more than 2000 spectators including Parents, Teachers and Professionals observed the event. Through informative stall and interactive sessions with the audience, Team DFPF highlighted the importance of sports as an Anti Drug and its significance to an individual for leading a healthy lifestyle. The sports day Olympiad proved to be an effective platform for delivering the message for a drug free Pakistan.
Beyloss on Health TV Mass Advocacy of Anti-Drugs through electronic media In order to promote the message for a Drug Free Society, Health TV conducted a documentary coverage of Shaheed Naveed Younus Center (SNYC) and its process of drug treatment & rehabilitation and interviewed the Coordinator Ms. Farheen Naveed and Clinical Psychologist Ms. Sofia Aslam. Ms. Farheen Naveed answered the questions regarding Drug Abuse and told that it is a problem that is getting worst day by day, according to an assessment, there are more than 5 million drug addicts in Pakistan and this number is increasing daily. She also briefed about the initiatives of SNYC including the recent establishment of Free Treatment & Rehab Facility of Landhi with the support of Government of Sindh, the ongoing venture of Drug Free Village. Recent inauguration of SNYC ward at Central Jail Karachi for addict prisoners and the inauguration of SNYC in Wazirabad Punjab were also discussed. All these centers are working day and night on treatment side. The Documentary was shown on the TV Channel on regular basis before and after evening news bulletin. National Art Competition/Exhibition 2011 DFPF organized an Art Competition & Exhibition among the Arts Schools of Pakistan and Art school of Central Jail Karachi with the theme of Paint for a Drug Free Pakistan on 24th December 2011 at Manzar Akbar Hall, Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi. The Central Jail artists also participated vigilantly in the competition. Around 200 paintings from different Art Schools of Pakistan and 30 paintings from the Art School of Central Jail Karachi were received and displayed. The Central Prison participants art work was appreciated to great extent by the jury and several artists from Central Prison were awarded with cash prizes and gift hampers However, due to their imprisonment, Artists of Central Jail Karachi could not attend the exhibition. Thus, in order to encourage this activity, DFPF re-exhibited the paintings at the Art School of Page # 3
Central Jail Karachi on 8th January 2012. People from all walks of life attended & appreciated the efforts of Drug Free Pakistan Foundation for taking this intriguing initiative and taking the Central Prison artists on board for this competition. The paintings silently delivered the message for the significance of a healthy Drug Free environment and why the dillema of drug addiction is harmful to our society. The paintings gave different messages and illustrations on how one can keep away from drugs and discourage its usage on both individual and collective level. The top three winning Art Pieces are shown below for further elaboration: 1st Prize The Picture depicts deep message of the significance of one s own conscience for building Drug Free Pakistan for a better & prosperous life. 2nd Prize This Picture relects that only an individual with his own will can prevent oneself from falling into substance abuse 3rd Prize This Art piece has exclusively come from the Art School of Central Jail Karachi, where the young artist has portrayed the true picture of drug addiction i.e. destruction of one s own self. He beautifully depicts his life s misery in his painting that received enormous appreciation. Page # 4
Teachers Against Drug Abuse (TADA) Training Program for Teachers on drug abuse prevention DFPF launched a campaign from the forum of TADA (Teachers against Drug Abuse), where more than 800 government and Private School teachers are already on board with us. Through this platform, DFPF initiated a series of Training Programs to empower the school teachers against drug abuse. In continuation of this series of workshops, DFPF organized a series of three training programs for teachers regarding Drug Abuse Prevention & Life Skills. Each program lasted for two days. These training programs were successfully implemented in the month of January. The 14 hours training programs comprised of essential life skills education topics including, Youth counseling, Peer to Peer education, Communication skills, Stress Management and techniques of facilitating the students in quitting soft drugs and decreasing their demands amongst them. Teachers are taken on board for drug free school programs to bring maximum participation to our cause. The workshops were conducted in collaboration with the City Institute of Image Management (CIIM) at old KMC building Auditorium. Salamat Rahay Pakistan on Waqt News Mass Advocacy of Anti-Drugs through electronic media Drug Abuse in Pakistan has gained strong roots in the society due to which numerous problems have emerged rapidly over the past years. In order to highlight the potential hazards of Drug Addiction, Waqt News conducted a program Salamat Rahey Pakistan on Drug Abuse Scenario of Pakistan in January. The Director, Drug Free Pakistan Foundation Ms. Farheen Naveed was invited being expert, who shared her expertise about Drug Abuse Treatment & Prevention and crimes related to drug addiction. She shared her knowledge on how to eradicate drug addiction from our country by utilizing every segment of the society for the same. Waqt News televised the program repeatedly at prime times prior to news bulletins to spread the message for a Drug Free Society more effectively. Page # 5
Community Awareness Program, Christian Town Korangi Karachi DFPF team, on the basis of need assessment of Christian Town, organized a community awareness program on drug abuse prevention. Christian Town is a populated area located in Karachi. The residents belong to the lower income group. Most of the people are working on daily wages which are sometimes not sufficient to fulfill their basic necessities of life. They are suffering from many social, moral and economic problems which lead them to stress, anxiety and frustration. To release these factors they become the victims of drugs due to easy availability in their locality. Community Mobilization against Drug abuse, was the vital issue in this program because the crowd consisted of people from all walks of life. During discussion people were given awareness with reference to development of protective measures and strengthening their role in the prevention of drug addiction with the joint effort of public and private partnership. A drama Nasoor was also played. The aim of this drama was to sensitize the audience that how drugs penetrate in our daily lives and become a source of danger and destruction. SOCIAL ACTION PROJECTS OF 3 rd PAKISTAN YOUTH CONGRESS Drug abuse awareness campaign in Chitral PYC Graduate Mr. Ahmed Shah organized an awareness campaign against drug abuse in his local town of Chitral. He assembled the local residents together and delivered relevant information regarding the risk and protective factors of drug abuse and the harmful effects of drugs on a community. There were around 60 families from the community who appreciated the initiative of our PYC Graduate and encouraged such steps for the community. Page # 6
Toy Room for deprived children and young street addicts at Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation (SIUT) Karachi Team of PYC Graduates took an initiative of bringing happiness to the underprivileged children including young street addicts admitted at the Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation by presenting them with toys and establishing a separate Toy Room where the young patients can relish themselves and play at their will. The project was initiated in August 2011 and after a 3 month hard work of collecting Toys from various Schools and Public Figures; the toy room was successfully launched in the month of November with the objective of Sharing Happiness. Parents and other community stakeholders appreciated the project and showed their utmost devotion to support such steps. Drug Awareness Program for youth in Hyderabad After attending PYC, our Graduates of 3rd Pakistan Youth Congress organized a two hour Drug Abuse awareness program for youth at Hyderabad City. Young students from different Colleges and universities were invited to exchange their knowledge about Drug Abuse,its Risk & Protective factors and the preventive measures for making Hyderabad City, Drug Free. Youth from various educational institutions attended the program and shared their knowledge regarding the said subject. At the end, a group of volunteers was formed to carry out various campaigns on individuals as well as group basis to educate the general masses about drugs and the possible methodologies for the eradication of drugs from the city. Drug Free Cricket Tournament Chitral Sports My Anti Drug In order to promote the concept of sports as an anti drug among youth, PYC Graduate Mr. Ahmed Shah organized a cricket match between the local cricket teams of Chitral district to aware the general public about the importance of sports for a drug free life. The match was held in a local cricket ground of Karachi. Before the match began, young volunteers briefed the spectators about the harmful effects of drugs and the threats they pose to our young generation. Through various banners and pamphlets, the message for a drug free society was delivered. The audience appreciated the effort and hoped to have more events of the same kind in future.
