MetLife s Accident Protection will pay out a tax-free cash sum to you for a range of specified accidental injuries from the less serious like breaking an arm to being blinded or even accidental death. How much is paid will of course depend on the severity of your injury. How you use the money is completely up to you. How do I know MetLife will pay out if I need to claim? MetLife s Accident Protection has the option of adding a Health Care benefit which is available only to UK clinical health care workers. It can pay out a cash lump sum if you contract a specified infection from work such as TB, HIV or Septicaemia caused by MRSA. A friend of mine had a bad car accident and was paralysed and it made me think, if that happened to me how would I cope financially? MetLife s Accident Protection would pay you a cash lump sum of up to 250,000 for permanent disability, which would help you get the support you needed and manage the cost of living.
Accident Protection 1 What is Accident Protection and why do I need it? What is Accident Protection? Have you ever thought about how you would pay your bills and look after your family if you had an accident and were badly injured? Accident Protection is specifically designed to give you financial support by providing a cash lump sum if you were to suffer from a specified accidental injury.* Why do I need it? It s only natural to think it won t happen to me, but Accident Protection can give you and your family peace of mind and greater financial certainty. The Government could help you with financial support of course, but it might not cover everything most families need. Did you know? There are 11,000 deaths from accidental injury each year**, 171 at work 200,000 people reported injuries that resulted in more than three days off work 137,264 children under 18 were admitted to hospital due to injury MetLife s Accident Protection offers you and your family greater financial certainty Our Accident Protection will pay you a tax-free cash lump sum up to 250,000, depending on the injury and benefit level you choose. We provide cover for: Accidental broken bones Hospitalisation due to accident or sickness (cover due to sickness starts once you ve had your policy for 12 months) Accidental permanent injuries Accidental total permanent disablement; and Accidental death (this may be subject to inheritance tax). Funeral benefit (once your policy has been in place for 12 months). It s important to note that the specific injuries we will cover are given in the tables on the next page. Hospitalisation cover due to sickness will commence once you have had your policy for 12 months No medical information required to obtain cover, although certain exclusions apply Funeral benefit will be paid if you ve had the policy for more than one year and die as a result of natural causes (if less than one year, a return of premiums paid will be provided) Any payments made to you are tax-free.* You can also choose extra, optional cover You can also choose extra benefits on top of the standard cover and your intermediary can tell you about these. Child Cover benefit Health Care benefit For children aged six months up to their 18th birthday (or 23rd birthday if they stay in full-time education), whether or not they live with you. Cover is provided as long as they are unmarried and remain a UK resident. Funeral benefits are excluded for children. Available to UK clinical health care workers only. This covers specified infectious illnesses contracted at work, for those who provide medical and clinical care such as doctors, dentists, nurses and paramedical professionals such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiographers, ambulance workers and students in these disciplines, working in the UK health care industry. 4 Accident Protection Please read the following. It s really important you know what we cover (and what we don t) IMPORTANT INFORMATION Please be aware: This policy is available to anyone aged between 18-59. Cover ends on your 65th birthday or sooner if: you re no longer a UK resident a payment of accidental total permanent disablement benefit is made in respect of you you die if you change your occupation to one which we do not provide cover for (see list below) We provide cover for: Accidental broken bones Hospitalisation due to accident and sickness Accidental permanent injuries Accidental total permanent disablement; and Accidental death (this may be subject to inheritance tax). Funeral benefit (once your policy has been in place for 12 months) We don t provide cover for: Psychiatric illness, depression, mental and stress-related conditions Broken bones relating to degenerative bone disorders such as osteoporosis. A broken nose is excluded If your occupation changes to agricultural worker; farm labourer or fruit picker; a member of the armed forces; asbestos worker; coal miner; motorcycle courier; professional diver; demolition worker; any user of explosives; labourer; oil or gas driller, worker and rigger; quarry worker; pneumatic driller; professional sportsperson; tunneller Certain sports e.g. mountaineering and rock climbing Contests of speed, e.g. horse racing and motocross competitions For Hospitalisation benefit: this would not be payable as a result of sickness during the first 12 months a policy is in force. This includes hospital stays that span the first 12 months claims will only be considered if the hospital is within the UK and the stay is more than 24 hours, up to a maximum of 90 days optional surgery, e.g. cosmetic surgery isn t covered (voluntary organ donation to a member of your immediate family is covered, even if this is within the first 12 months a policy is in force) Total permanent disablement (TPD) covers only accidental injuries. To benefit from this policy, you must be a UK resident as defined in the Terms and Conditions and benefits must be paid in pounds Sterling from/to a UK bank account This policy does not have a cash surrender value You can reduce your premium at any time by reducing the level of cover. Optional benefits can also be removed at any time. Optional Benefits Cover Health Care Benefit for clinical health care workers only Infectious illness must have been contracted solely and independently of any other cause by occupational exposure during the term of the policy MRSA infection by itself is not an infectious illness that is covered by this policy. Septicaemia caused by MRSA is covered and is defined in the terms and conditions The policy benefit will be payable only if you survive for at least 28 days after the date of diagnosis Health Care benefit is payable only once during the term of the policy. Child Cover To be eligible for Child Cover the child must be aged between six months and 18 years (23 years if unmarried and in full-time education) A child must be a UK resident to be eligible for cover If you take out Child Cover, cancer benefit will not be payable if the eligible child has been previously diagnosed with cancer or has had any tests or investigations that lead to the diagnosis of cancer, either prior to the policy start date or during the first 90 days the policy is in force If you take out Child Cover, hospitalisation benefit will not be payable if hospitalisation is as a result of a congenital illness.
