BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE General John A. Lejeune, born in 1867 in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, served in the United States military forces for 45 years. He was a Louisiana State University cadet in 1882-1883, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1888, and retired as commandant of the United States Marine Corps in 1929. He commanded the U.S. Army 2 nd Infantry Division in World War I, during which he received the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre from the French government as well as the Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Army and from the U.S. Navy. He served as Superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute from 1929 to 1937, and died in November 1942. Page 4 of 7

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE One of the earliest items in the collection is a letter from White Turpin, great-grandfather of John Archer Lejeune, to his brother, Thomas Turpin, of Centerville, Maryland, telling of the dead and wounded following the Battle of New Orleans (1815). Also included is a letter (with typescript) from John A. Lejeune to his mother while a cadet at Louisiana State University (October 1882), Cadet Lejeune s report card for term ending July 1883, and Lejeune s school copybook (1878). A military order (one copy in English, another in French) announcing Lejeune s award of the French Legion of Honor (November 30, 1918) along with a letter of transmittal accompanying the award (January 24, 1919). Also included is a copy of orders sent to Lejeune by the Adjutant General, American E.F., announcing Lejeune s award of the Distinguished Service Medal (January 9, 1919), as well as a testimonial recognizing his achievements during the First World War presented to the General by the faculty of Louisiana State University (December 31, 1918). Other items include a copy of the address delivered by Major General Lejeune at the Alumni Luncheon at LSU, entitled, The Old War Skule (May 1, 1926), a letter from Lejeune to a Mr. Cole mentioning Lejeune s book The Reminiscences of a Marine (1934), a biographical sketch of Lejeune (1949), and a list of his medals (compiled 1955).
