Optimizing Tyre Production with Automated ID at Nokian Tyres

Nokian Tyres Finnish car tyre manufacturer for winter and summer tyres About 6 million tires produced annually with a daily production of 18000 units Own factories in Nokia, Finland and in Vsevolozhsk, Russia. Contract manufacturing in Indonesia, China, Slovakia, India, Spain and in the USA

The Challenge at Nokian Tyres To manage production, Nokian Tyres uses a just-in-time (JIT) stock control process based on Kanban principles Actual stock control consisted of a manual system of markers (cards) associated with the wagons that hold the tire components

The Challenge at Nokian Tyres To optimize the manufacturing process and better control key assets, Nokian Tyres wanted to automate their Kanban process EB, Trackway and Confidex was selected to meet Nokian Tyre s challenge

The Solution The automated ID implementation covers two manufacturing lines and 27 assembly lines at the production plant in Finland To ensure successful roll-out of an automated ID solution, a phased development process was followed

Phased development process Proof of Technology / Learning :Testing the technology Proof of Concept : Designing the solution using selected technology Pilot : Testing concepts and planning integration Limited implementation : Isolated deployments of solution Enterprise Implementation : Solution integration and full - scale roll -out

Solution overview The automated ID system is a combination of EB s Identification Network concepts, EB RFID Readers, Trackway Manufacturing and RFID server software, and Confidex Survivor RFID tags

Solution overview The manufacturing system processes tens of thousands events daily, ensuring the real-time status of production is available instantly The system also handles exception circumstances

Selected Solution Components EB RFID Reader URP1000- ETSI High acquisition performance with rugged mechanical design Trackway Manufacturing system Confidex Survivor RFID tag EPC Class1 Generation2 UHF hard tag

Solution The system represents the first full RFID implementation in Finland for a manufacturing process at production level System is probably the largest RFID deployment in Finland

Benefits Clear increase in productivity Assembly line efficiency has significantly improved through more accurate, real-time reporting and directing of manufacturing and stock control Losses due to material waste and errors have reduced Improvements in flexibility
