Successfully Completing Your Student Teaching Application Please bear the following things in mind as you fill out your application: This document will be used to market you to prospective principals and sites. It represents your: Attention to detail Ability to follow directions English language skills Ability to express yourself Pertinent coursework Past classroom experience Past experiences working with children Work ethics as demonstrated by other jobs and positions you have had. Common Errors Not including EVERY course in your major and minor, even if it was taken at another institution. This is of special interest to individuals in your field who are deciding if you appear well prepared. Not including such things as helping with scouts with your own children or other activities you supported while your own child participated, young peoples activities you supported at your house of worship. Noting special training or experience you have had such as MLPP training or experience with a special math program such as Chicago Math. Not presenting 3 letters of recommendation ON LETTERHEAD. You may want to use the Request for a Recommendation Letter Form that is available from the director s office in order to focus your recommenders. Submit three copies of each letter. Do not have letters sent to Marygrove. Not listing a stable, working phone number Use your Mom s for a home # if need be but very often numbers change from the time of submission until placement so we need a number where you can be located (note: this is also true for job applications or resumes) Use paperclips instead of stapling because they are sent by fax to schools. You may email an initial copy to jlittman@marygrove.edu but you must mail or deliver three hard copies complete with letters of reference to the Education Office, 2 nd Floor Madame Cadillac Building Get your application proofread by at least two people------letting the preparation of your application go until the last minute, most often results in DISASTER. An incomplete application puts you on the bottom of the placement list until completed.

Dear, I am applying for permission to student teach as the final step in my goal to become a teacher. I have been requested to submit three letters of reference and I would very much appreciate having you submit one on my behalf. The application requires that the letter be submitted on a letterhead. Below are some of the qualities and skills of interest. You may use one or two or choose other qualities you see as more fitting. Work habits Attendance/ Punctuality Social skills Academic accomplishments Skills working with teens or children Skills in a school setting Thank you very much for assisting me with your time and support. Sincerely, This is not a confidential recommendation so you may send to me at

MARYGROVE COLLEGE STUDENT TEACHING APPLICATION If you will be ready for a student teaching placement within the next year (F 10 or W 11), your major/minor classes have been completed, the appropriate MTTC tests have been passed and you are finishing the professional teaching classes, then it is time to make an appointment for an interview and complete an application for placement. Please contact the Director of Student Teaching at jlittman@marygrove.edu. Carefully complete the application which will be sent to you and then electronically provide the completed application to the Director of Student Teaching 48 hours before your scheduled interview. 1. Pay close attention to editing your teaching narrative and philosophy statement text; this application will be presented to districts, principals, and/or cooperating teachers. 2. Bring three copies of current character reference letters (dated and on letterhead) from professional, youth related experiences volunteer or paid to your interview. 3. Documentation of a TB test result done within the past six months and proof of insurance must be provided before your placement is finalized. Completed applications (properly filled out and containing all test dates) are dated, numbered and then placed on the Master Assignment List in order of receipt. Incomplete, unedited applications seriously jeopardize your chances of being placed in the desired semester. Student teaching is a 15-week, full-time commitment in a classroom. You are discouraged from taking other classes or working at other jobs during this time, as it is a very demanding experience. There is a mandatory/regular/bi-weekly student teaching seminar at Marygrove, with assignments that support your work in the classroom. The first seminar takes place on the first Saturday of the semester; attendance is obligatory. You are also required to complete an Action Research Assignment during the semester. Your program advisor will verify your teaching major and minor, your professional teaching classes, and the passing of the MTTC tests. Be sure you have provided all appropriate transcripts to your advisor. This initial educational audit determines your eligibility to register for Student Teaching and be placed in a classroom. Course registration must be done in person and requires the permission of the Director of Student Teaching. The Director of Student Teaching is responsible for arranging the placement of teacher candidates in schools. Please do not contact schools regarding this yourself. Placements for the FA term are arranged the spring before; placements for WI term are arranged in early fall. As we are competing with other teacher preparation colleges, we can only place fully qualified candidates who apply well in advance. Your application will be prioritized according to when it is received and how complete it is. Once the complete application has been submitted and you have been interviewed by the Director of Student Teaching, Joan Peterson Littman, you will be notified of your placement and authorized to register for EDU 499/699. You may be asked to visit a site for an interview prior to final placement.

LIABILITY INSURANCE WAIVER The Education Department has informed me of their requirement that I purchase Professional Liability Insurance coverage. I understand that I need to carry professional Liability Insurance during my student teaching. The Education Department requires that I select the insurance package through membership in a Professional Organization. Information on two of these organizations, Student Michigan Education Association (http://www.mea.org/smea/ ) and Christian Educators Association International (http://www.ceai.org/) has been made available to me via the Marygrove website. The Education Department has also shared with me that it may be possible to add professional liability insurance to my homeowner s insurance policy. I am aware that in addition to the information provided to me about these sources, I have the option of choosing alternative liability insurance. I have indicated below my decision regarding Professional Liability: I have purchased or plan to obtain Professional Liability Insurance through the company named below. I will provide proof of this purchase and it s expiration date to the Marygrove Student Teaching Director prior to the start of my student teaching semester.
