Dear Teacher Preparation Student, Hello! The time is quickly approaching for your student teaching experience. This is an exciting and critical time in your future career as a teacher and we want to ensure you get off to a good start! Attached you will find a check-list of things that must be accomplished before you can be assigned to a school for Fall 2014. The application must be returned to Sally Starkweather at 1125 Nevada State Drive, Henderson, NV 89002 no later than March 1, 2015. Please note the addition of the PRAXIS II test to the application requirements. Official passing Praxis II scores are due no later than May 15, 2014. There is a study guide available in the NSC library and you may also obtain more information on-line at http://www.ets.org/praxis/ or by calling 1-800-853-6773. Please list the district where you would like to student teach. Specific school requests are not allowed. If a principal has requested that you complete your student teaching at a particular site, that principal must notify the in writing as soon as possible. Finally, your student teaching experience will last a full semester with an accompanying seminar for two hours, one evening per week. Student teaching is a full-time commitment and must be the last and only course you take in your final semester. The time and date will be posted in the course schedule. STUDENT TEACHING ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 1. Completion of all courses in official degree plan. 2. Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or better. 3. Acceptance into the, Teacher Preparation Program which includes verification of passing Praxis I scores. STUDENT TEACHING CHECKLIST INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Please use the following checklist to ensure you are prepared for your student teaching experience. 1. APPLICATION FOR STUDENT TEACHING 2. ADVISOR REVIEW Make an appointment with your advisor to discuss eligibility and coursework needed before student teaching. Take of copy of the Advisor Review form to the appointment. Ask your advisor to complete and sign the form. Keep a copy for your file and turn the original, signed copy in with your application packet. 3. FBI FINGERPRINT DOCUMENTATION You must contact your school district regarding their fingerprinting policy for student teaching. 4. LIABILITY INSURANCE DOCUMENTATION Proof of possession of $1 Million in liability Insurance (NSEA Membership). A membership application can be found online at https://sites.nea.org/howtojoin/statestudent.do?mbrtype=student&sea=nv. You must submit a copy of your receipt as documentation. If you would like to receive a paper application please contact the at (702) 992-2515. 5. PRAXIS II Proof of passing scores on the Praxis II test(s) no later than May 15, 2014. Please note that it may take 3-4 weeks for the to receive official scores from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Passing Praxis II scores are required for NSC student teaching and for licensure by the Nevada Department of Education. To ensure timely submission of the scores, students are strongly encouraged to take the test(s) one semester prior to student teaching. When completing registration material for the Praxis II, students must list NSC (R9020) and the Nevada Department of Education (R8670) as score recipients. Information regarding exam dates, registration and testing sites for the Praxis II can be found online at http://www.ets.org/praxis/register. 6. SUBSITUTE TEACHING LICENSE Application can be found on the State of Nevada website at http://nde.doe.nv.gov/teachers_licensing.html. The substitute license is a requirement for northern Nevada school districts. The will need a copy of your substitute license. 7. GRADUATION APPLICATION Initiate graduation application with the NSC Registrar's Office. The graduation application can be found on the NSC website at www.nsc.edu. STUDENT TEACHING WASHOE AND LYON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT Students must have a current valid Nevada Substitute Teaching License prior to the internship. NSC will notify students when they will need to contact Lisa Lightfoot, with the Washoe County Volunteer Services, for information regarding fingerprinting and the substitute training orientation. Students will be required to undergo a federal, state and local criminal information background check. As part of the criminal information background, the school district requires all students be fingerprinted and pay the $50, or amended fee, associated with the fingerprinting. The school district will provide an orientation and sexual harassment training to all students. This requirement is waived for current licensed employees of the school district. Students will also need to sign an Indemnity Agreement and Notification of Indemnity Responsibility. Please contact Sally Starkweather at sally.starkweather@nsc.edu for the form. LYON COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT Students must have a current valid Nevada Substitute Teaching License and in all other respects be qualified to be a substitute teacher in the school district. Students will be required to undergo a federal, state and local criminal information background check. As part of the criminal information background, the school district requires all students be fingerprinted and drug tested at their own expense ($149.75). Fingerprinting will be done at the district office. Drug testing must be performed by any of the Concentra institutions in Reno, Sparks, or Carson City. The school district Human Resources department must receive drug test results prior to the start of the internship.
