NIH IRACDA for Baylor College of Medicine Post-doctoral Fellows An Institutional Research Award for Career Development and Advancement REACH (Research Education and Career Horizons) Program A partnership between Baylor College of Medicine and THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES ONE BAYLOR PLAZA, MS-BCM 215 HOUSTON, TX 77030 (713) 798-6644 Prairie View A & M, St. Thomas and the of Houston, Downtown Applicants must be US Citizens or Permanent US Residents We are delighted to accept applicants for a partnership program that will team Post-doctoral Scholars from Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) with three Houston area minority serving institutions to train a cadre of scientists/educators who will develop and teach new undergraduate courses and advance biomedical research. The REACH Program IRACDA Scholars will introduce frontier-level technology into courses designed to prepare undergraduates to pursue graduate biomedical education. Your interest in the REACH IRACDA Program indicates that you understand the importance of science in today s world and that you want to participate in the scientific advances of the future and educating the next generation of scientists. We have gained incredible knowledge that leads us toward exciting biomedical questions, practical diagnostic tools and treatments to improve people s health. But we need scientists from every population in America to turn ideas into reality. Prairie View A & M, the of Houston, Downtown and St. Thomas have made a commitment to enhance their curricula and advising for under-represented students and are enthusiastic partners in this project. The REACH IRACDA Program provides Post-doctoral Scholars with NIH pay scale salary and benefits and a small research supply budget to work with a BCM faculty member of their choice for three years. The teaching component of the REACH IRACDA is expected to consume 25% of the Scholars time over a three year period, with most of that time commitment coming in the third year of the program. Scholars will participate in workshops on skills scientists need (including a writing course), workshops on mentoring under-represented students and a 12-15 week course to prepare to use active learning styles in incorporating advanced technology into upper level undergraduate courses. During the second year of the program, Scholars will observe in a class at the campus on which they will teach and begin developing their courses. In the second to third year, Scholars will be granted adjunct faculty status at the campus(es) on which they teach, provided an office space, participate in a campus committee, and teach or co-teach one course each of two semester. Scholars and the teaching institution will receive a teaching/equipment budget to enhance their success. Scholars will mentor up to three undergraduates with an interest in Ph.D. study and advise them on their graduate applications. We expect that this combination of strategies will help Post-doctoral Scholars develop valuable skills and experience and help under-represented college students prepare to enter and succeed in biomedically related Ph.D. programs and biomedical research careers. We are very experienced at helping under-represented scientists develop their careers. Our SMART summer undergraduate research program includes 30% under-represented participants and has received high praise. The resources of an NIH IMSD helped us transform the environment at BCM for under-represented Ph.D. and MD/Ph.D. students. More than 80 under-represented students are now enrolled in our Ph.D. and MD/Ph.D. programs with an 80% retention rate. They have won more than 120 awards and fellowships. Our programs are cited as a model for the nation, but we feel that we can make even greater contributions by enhancing curricula at minority serving institutions, while also providing research and career building opportunities for Post-doctoral Scholars. A complete application for the program includes: the REACH IRACDA Program Application, including the essays; a CV; three letters of recommendation; transcripts from colleges, universities and graduate school attended. Applications will be accepted at any time and participants chosen on rolling basis. We hope to fill our five positions by July 1, 2009 with a projected start date of August 1 for funding from

IRACDA. There will be 5 new positions for the 2009-2010 program. You may work with a mentor you have selected or we will help you find an excellent post-doc mentor. Please contact Gayle Slaughter, Ph.D. (gayles@bcm.edu) if you have any questions. We are here to work with people who have the motivation, talent and commitment to continue their educational training. Together we can help you move toward the future you envision. Sincerely, Gayle R. Slaughter, Ph.D. Director SMART, SMART PREP, IMSD, REACH programs Assistant Dean of Graduate Education Associate Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology Hiram Gilbert, Ph.D. Sr. Assoc.
