NICOSIA OLD WALLED CITY DOWNTOWN INITIATIVE MAP

PROJECT FACTS JUNE 2012 The research process for the Nicosia Downtown Initiative began in September 2010 following information gathered from the European Commission s Annual Report regarding the total crossings at the Ledra Street pedestrian crossing point by non-cypriot EU Citizens and third country nationals. [Annual Report on the implementation of Council Regulation(EC) 866/2004 of 29 April 2004 and the situation resulting from its application (21.09.2010)] The project concept for the Downtown Initiative for the Old Walled City in Nicosia was drafted in the Inception Report (12.11.2010). 16 Downtown Projects were reviewed in order to gather information on international best practices in the field. 56 local and international printed touristic material including maps shopping guides event calendars and various informative publications were collected and reviewed at the research phase. The TAT met with a local publishing company to collect information on previously printed shopping guides and maps issued for Nicosia and Kyrenia. (Dört Renk Publishing - 14.10.2010) Meetings were held with officials that have previously worked in the Nicosia Master Plan and New Vision Project in order to gather information on previous work and projects implemented in Nicosia. [USAID-EDGE Project Senor Consultant Meliha Kaymak (05.07.2011) / Nicosia Turkish Municipality Project Manager Ali Guralp (27.10.2011)] The Initiative Workgroup consists of 12 stakeholders; KOBIGEM Tourism Planning Office Nicosia Turkish Municipality Chamber of Commerce Chamber of Industry Chamber of Shopkeepers and Artisans Hoteliers Asc Tourist Guides Asc Tourism Agents Asc Restauranteurs Asc Business Women Asc and Old Walled City Development Initiative which have actively participated in the research planning and implementation processes. 17 Business and Visitor Surveys were reviewed prior to the design of the Nicosia Downtown Business and Visitor Surveys. 54 Business owners representing 66 businesses were interviewed for the Nicosia Downtown Business Demographic Survey between January-March 2012. %96.3 of business owners declared that they want to take part in the Nicosia Downtown Initiative.

STRATEGIC PLAN SUMMARY VISION For Nicosia Old Walled City to become a sustainable touristic shopping area branded through its unique historical and cultural heritage and a vibrant focal point frequented by both locals and foreign tourists MISSION Providing assistance on a particular set of marketing programs and services which encourages involvement and ownership ensures economic vitality and promotes downtown assets. 1. BRANDING STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES To develop a strong brand reflecting the region s unique historical and cultural heritage that will represent business owners of the region in order to support the marketing of Nicosia Downtown. 1.1. Initiate Logo Competition 1.2. Design Initiative Brochure 1.3. Design Promotional Stickers 1.4. Design Downtown Map 1.5. Design Downtown Website 1.6. Design Downtown Initiative Short Film 1.7. Design Shopping Guide and Events Calendar 1.8. Design Shopping Bags 2. DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT

To design and conduct training programs and provide process consultancy according to the needs of the businesses in the Downtown area. 2.1 Conduct Training Programmes Targeting Downtown Businesses 2.2 Consultancy & Coaching for Downtown Businesses 3. DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PRODUCTS To develop or redesign traditional and niche local products especially through revision of packaging techniques to target the touristic market demands. To support the presentation of souvenirs and memorabilia that will come out as a result of branding studies. 3.1. Initiate Meetings with Stakeholders and Contact Producers for Product Development 3.2. Select Pilot Sales Spots Regarding New Products 4. EVENTS To improve the foot traffic time spent and sales in the region by conducting a variety of events targeting both locals and foreign tourists. 4.1. Downtown Initiative Launch Event 4.2.
