Mathematics Grade 6 Convert Units of Measure within the Same System
Dear Parent or Guardian: Your son or daughter is currently learning to change, compare, and compute with units of measurement within the same measurement system. Here is your chance to help him or her practice this important skill. In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your son or daughter to do. MEASUREMENT Parent Pointer Measurement is a part of everyday life. We constantly measure height, weight, liquids, distance, and time. We often have to be able to decide how many inches there are in a number of feet or how many hours there are in a number of days. Being able to change, compare, and compute units of measurement will be useful to your son or daughter throughout his or her life. Math In the Home, On the Go, and For the Fun of It DIRECTIONS: Review the Measurement Systems reference sheet with your parent or guardian. Look around your home or outside and discuss how you would change the measurement unit for different objects. For example, you could measure your walls in inches instead of feet. On the Change Those Measurements worksheet, change the measurements given on the left side of the table to measurements that will correspond to the measurement abbreviations on the right side of the table. The first one is done as an example for you. Talk About It After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity! CHANGE THOSE MEASUREMENTS DIRECTIONS: Change the measurements on the left side of the table below to ones that will go with the measurement abbreviations on the right side of the table. The first one is done for you. Remember, to convert to a smaller unit of measurement, multiply. For example, inches are smaller than feet, so to convert 3 feet to inches: 3 feet 12 inches/foot = 36 inches. To convert to a larger unit of measurement, divide. For example, pints are larger than cups, so to convert 10 cups to pints: 10 cups 2 cups/pint = 5 pints. Measurement Changed Measurement 3,000 ft (3,000 ft 3 ft/yd = 1,000 yd) 1,000 yd 5 km m 100 qt gal 480 min hr 800 cm m 2 yd in 3 pt c 6 days hr 360 in ft 10,000 m km 8,000 lb T 2 g mg 2,000 kl L 2 gal pt Think about it: How many cups do you think are in one gallon?
