The Video Conferencing Pilot. An Educational Project AIM: To raise the profile of Video Conferencing as a tool for teaching and learning and to create a Cornish Pool of expertise that can be used to support and train other schools for the future. OBJECTIVE 1 To plan a transition project between primary and secondary schools using live satellite links and Video Conferencing to enhance teaching and learning and enjoy and achieve.

Very pleased with themselves..8,000 lives saved!

So far The Plan 14 th March- Overview and choice of equipment 16 th April Training on start of Transition Project e-mission run with teachers. 1 st May- Half day. What should we include? VC Link. Half Day. Joint planning between partner schools

The Plan Half day planning in schools for Lead teachers in project. Half day trialling activities with sample pupils. 6 th and 7 th June- Whole day planning between partner schools. Subsequent project. Berlewen Building. June/September One day- visiting year 7 teachers to year 6/ year 6 teacher to year 7. Day 7 - Review of Project, moderations and Development plans approved.

Agenda for the day

Time to get active I know where Montserrat is in relation to other islands I understand where the planets are in relation to the sun. I can order the planets according to size and remember this order. I understand how to extract relevant information and can problem solve. I can consider design problems for objects that are taken into space.

Collective memory

Objectives for this session To learn how the strategy of Collective memory equally supports the thinking skills of Information processing and Evaluation To consider ways of implementing the strategy in the classroom To consider ways of maximising the learning potential of this strategy for all pupils

How does it work? Each team sends one member at a time to look at the image for ten seconds They return to their group and start to reproduce the original After a short period of time, the next member from the group looks at the image for ten seconds After each turn, groups reflect and plan the next visit After a few turns each, pupils are asked to compare their versions with the original

Now your turn.. I know where Montserrat is in relation to other islands You have 10 seconds each to view the image and 1 minute to put down what you remember and plan the next visit. The next member of the group comes up. You will have 2 turns each. The scaffolding for each group is slightly different

I understand where the planets are in relation to the sun. 10 pupils involved Each take a card You have 1 minute to put yourself in order and decide what the deliberate mistake is. The time starts now

Acronyms to remember the order of the planets from the sun Mercury My Many My Mother Venus very very vicious Veronica Earth educated elderly earthworm enjoyed Mars mother men might my Jupiter just just just jam Saturn served snooze swallow sandwich Uranus us Under Us under Neptune nachos newspapers now Neptune

I can order the planets according to size and remember this order. Re-organise your self into order of size You have 1 minute. Which one of you is not a planet?

Order according to size: The Sun is a star, not a planet. Pluto is now classed as a dwarf planet. It is the second largest object in the Kuiper belt.

Now your turn.. In pairs, can you come up with an acronym to remember the order for the size of planets?... Mercury Mars Venus Earth Neptune Uranus Saturn Jupiter

Use the tables to add your own acronyms in pairs Mercury Mars Venus Earth Neptune Uranus Saturn Jupiter

Voting systems Jupiter has 15 317 900 times more mass than Earth Saturn is 15 55 95 times as massive as Earth.

I understand how to extract relevant information and can problem solve. Look at the news extract about cleaning in space. Highlight the main problems about cleaning in space. Put this information into the 1 st two columns of the table. Think carefully about ways that these problems can be overcome by filling in the last column.

I can consider design problems for objects that are taken into space. Look at the object on your table. Use clues from the extract and what you know about space to re-design this object for a space shuttle. Draw your design in the middle of the page and annotate why you have made these modifications around the outside of your drawing. You have until the end of the music to complete your design.

Principles for creating engagement Activating prior knowledge Setting challenging targets Cooperative group work Metacognition Modes of representing information Scaffolds Deep and surface learning

The Rainbow Pack Tool kits on each table. Unit 14. Active Engagement. if you are interested, involved and appropriately challenged, then you are engaged in your learning.

Plenary. Next steps Use the training and planning sessions from today to plan your unit of work. Book in half a day for planning and half a day for trialling activities with sample pupils before the 6 th June. Notify myself and Linda of dates. Ensure you have fixed the dates for the Video Conferencing with the NSC within the next 2 weeks and please keep me informed of any changes. Ensure you register with JANET. You can not VC to NSC unless this is set up and it can take 10 days. You then must do a pre-test. Next dates together are the 6 th and 7 th June at the Berlewen Building.

Partnerships Ensure that you keep in contact with your partner schools to ensure continuity and progression. Book in dates for the year 7 teachers to visit the year 6 teachers during an e-mission or follow up work. Notify myself and Linda of dates and times.
