Hat Pattern An easy hat pattern for ages 1-3 & 4-6 crocheted in worsted weight yarn What You Will Need: 1 2 skeins of worsted weight (CYCA #4 OR 10 wpi) yarn in bright yellow to match Gustafer s fur Note- *If using 1 large skein, wind into two equal balls* >1 skein of worsted weight yarn in white >1 skein of worsted weight yarn in bright blue to match Gustafer s eyes >1 skein of worsted weight yarn in black US I 5.50 mm crochet hook US H 5 mm crochet hook yarn needle Day Use this picture and the Year in the Gus s cover art to determine placement for eyes and facial features. 2 black 5/8 buttons black thread Abbreviations: dc = double crochet sl st = slip stitch hdc = half double crochet ch = chain st = stitch(es) rnd = round Gauge: 7 rows of 11 dc = 4 x 4 Sizes: Age 1 3 hat = height 11, circumference 21 + Age 4 6 hat = height 12, circumference 22 + Gustafer & Slim take a quick break from crocheting to try on the hat so far lookin good, Slimothy!

A Note On Yarn: For the hat and earflaps, you will be working with two strands of yarn held together. I chose to use a worsted weight acrylic for my project for two reasons: acrylic wears and washes well, and the yarn held double throughout helps keep the hat s shape and the peak standing up. Wool should work just as well if you prefer. Your results may vary with alternative fibers or yarn weights. A Note on Construction: This hat is primarily crocheted in the round using the double crochet stitch. The optional ear flaps are added to the finished hat by slipping a stitch to the right, double crocheting a ½ circle, then slipping a stitch to the left. A second row is added to cover the ear. You can then embellish the flaps with braided ties. Gustafer s eyes are crocheted flat and sewn to the hat, adding button centers, while facial features are embroidered and chain stitched after eye placement. The Inspiration: My family fell in love with Gustafer Yellowgold in 2009 when we saw Morgan Taylor perform at the Levitt Shell in Memphis, TN. We have enjoyed the music and DVDs ever since. I was inspired to create this crocheted hat for my daughter to wear to a Gustafer Yellowgold soft rock show in February 2013. Ear Flap Pattern Set-up - Turn your finished hat with the back facing and the hat edge closest to you. Flatten it while centering the back seam where each round joined the following one. Right Ear Flap- Looking at the back, count 12 stitches to the right from the center seam and insert I hook to begin. The first row of the right ear flap will be worked with the wrong side (inside) of the hat facing you. Row 1 With yellow yarn held double throughout and I hook, ch 3 for the 1 st dc, sl st in 3 rd hat edge st to the right, 7 dc in the same base st (12 th from center back) of the chain 3, sl st in 3 rd hat edge dc to the left. 8 st. Turn the hat so the right side (outside) faces you now. Row 2 Ch 3, sl st in 3 rd hat edge dc to the right, working left 2 dc in every 1 dc, sl st in 3 rd hat edge dc to the left. Fasten off, break yarn, and weave into the wrong side of the work with a yarn needle. Left Ear Flap- Looking at the back, count 12 stitches to the left from the center seam and insert I hook to begin. The first row of the left ear flap will be worked with the right side (outside) of the hat facing you. Row 1 With yellow yarn held double throughout and I hook, ch 3 for the 1 st dc, sl st in 3 rd hat edge st to the right, 7 dc in the same base st (12 th from center back) of the chain 3, sl st in 3 rd hat edge dc to the left. 8 st. Turn the hat so the wrong side (inside) faces you now. Row 2 Ch 3, sl st in 3 rd hat edge dc to the right, working left 2 dc in every 1 dc, sl st in 3 rd hat edge dc to the left. Fasten off, break yarn, and weave ends into the wrong side of the work with a yarn needle. Braided Ties- To make braided ties to secure your hat, cut 3 long strands of yarn, at least 2 ½ times as long as you would like the finished tie. My finished ties were each 8 long. Fold in half and using your crochet hook, insert the fold onto the center bottom stitch of the ear flap. Secure with a lark s head knot and pull securely. You will then have 6 strands. Braid with strands doubled until your desired length is reached, tying off with a tight overhand knot. Trim the ends. Now you are ready to make Gustafer s eyes and facial features! 4

Eye Pattern Make 2 Rnd 1 With bright blue yarn (single strand) and H hook, ch 3, 9 dc into the first ch from hook, sl st into the first dc. 9 st. Rnd 2 Change to white yarn (single strand) and ch 1, hdc in the same st, work 2 hdc in each st around, work one additional hdc and sl st into the first hdc. 20 st. Rnd 3 Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same st, * 1 hdc, 2 hdc, repeat from * around, sl st into first hdc. 30 st. Fasten off, break yarn and weave ends into the wrong side of the work with a yarn needle. Using black thread and a needle of your choosing, sew a black 5/8 button to the center of each eye. Finishing Step 1 - Using the picture from pages 1 & 6 of this pattern and the Year in the Day cover art as references, sew the eyes to the hat using a yarn needle and white yarn. Fasten off, break yarn, and weave ends into the wrong side of the fabric with a yarn needle. Step 2 With black yarn (single strand) and a yarn needle, embroider around one eye, determine the center of the nose along the hat edge and embroider down to the edge and back up again to outline Gustafer s nose, and embroider around the second eye. Fasten off, break yarn, and weave ends into the wrong side of the fabric with a yarn needle Step 3 With yellow yarn (single strand) and H crochet hook, ch st the curvilinear V of Gustafer s brow ridge over his eyes. Fasten off, break yarn, and weave ends into the wrong side of the fabric with a yarn needle. Congratulations! You re finished! You now have the perfect hat to wear to a mustard slug reunion, Butter Pond Lake, a snake prom, or the Minnesota woods. Questions? Comments? Sycophantic Fan Mail?
