Mary was the daughter of Theodore Peacock Bogert and Frances Nelson Jones. Mary died February 4, 1880 in New York, New York, New York, at 47 years of age. After his death, a Memorial was published by the New York Academy of Medicine. The following information is part of the Memorial: Dr. Foster entered Harvard University at the early age of thirteen years, which is striking proof of his precocity in his studies, and of his advanced intelligence. He graduated in 1833 and studied medicine in the office of Dr. Winslow Lewis, of Boston, and graduated at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1836, when he was but twenty years old. He then went abroad to study in London and Paris. He began practice in New York in 1839, paying special attention to the diseases of women and children. In July of 1872, after a long illness including pleurisy and tuberculosis, he visited some kind friends and patients on the north shore of Lake Superior, where he most decidedly improved. He returned home in September to prepare for the removal of his family to Nassau, New Providence. This seemed the last resort in search of health, and although the effort was very great, and the trial of leaving old and dearly loved friends and relatives was severe, still it seemed an imperative duty to make the sacrifice. There he attended to his professional duties, cheering the sick and relieving the sufferings of many who were, like himself, seeking health in a foreign land. He calmly watched the progress of his disease, recognized every symptom of his

The Foster Family 9 approaching end. Frequently he would exclaim, it is hard to die away from home, but it is all right, it is all well. He died most peacefully on the 18th of April, 1873. During the early part of his college life he translated and published a work from Spanish. In addition to thorough classical erudition, he was familiar with three modern languages besides his own. Among his writings on medical subjects may be mentioned his essay on Atelectasis of the Lungs in Young Infants, and his paper on Mammary Abscesses, full of practical good sense, which deserves to be placed in permanent form for general instruction. The wretched treatment of these cases, common hitherto, became inexcusable in the light of this eminently sound and practical paper. Besides these is his paper On Phenomena Observed In A Case Of Epilepsy, and his most finished production, his Oration before the New York Academy of Medicine. Samuel Conant Foster and Mary Benezet Bogert had the following children: *68 i. Theodore Bogert 9 Foster was born August 10, 1858. 69 ii. Conant Foster was born in New York, New York, New York July 6, 1860. Conant died July 13, 1870 at 10 years of age. *70 iii. Mary Conant Foster was born November 22, 1863. *71 iv.
