CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK, SCHOOLS OF STUDY, AND MAJORS All Wando High School students are strongly encouraged to develop goals and plans for life after high school graduation. Students will be asked to select a major in one of the career-related Schools of Study offered at Wando. This choice is a collaborative effort involving students, parents, teachers, and counselors. Students will select a major that reflects their interests and abilities leading to the achievement of personal, education, and career goals. During registration each spring, students will have the opportunity to reevaluate their goals and adjust their plans accordingly. Four Schools of Study have been established: School of Arts and Humanities School of Business and Information Systems School of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering School of Health, Human and Public Services Based on their choices, students will be able to follow our Curriculum Framework which organizes our many course offerings based on a student s long-term college and career goals. No matter what major a student chooses, the high school graduation core requirements are the same. The intent of the Curriculum Framework is to clearly advise students of recommended elective choices concentrating on the courses which provide the best preparation for post secondary education and employment. A listing and description of all courses offered at Wando is provided in the Program of Studies which is updated annually. We believe using a career-related school approach to teaching and learning will help students to see the relevance of their course work and its connection to their future. Teachers are assigned to a School of Study based on their individual interests and their academic and professional training. To help build a greater sense of community among faculty and students, each School is assigned to its own area within the larger building. Each School of Study will serve 450 800 students, compared to the 2700 students currently in grades 10 12. Wando s Schools of Study will allow greater personalization and provide opportunities for stronger relationships among students and between students and staff. Our Honors and Advanced Placement courses will be interspersed among the Schools. Our Honors/Advanced Placement students already have an informal smaller learning community established but they will also benefit from focused goal-setting and college and career planning. Students who complete at least four Advanced Placement courses will be recognized as having completed an Advanced Placement major. In making wise college and career choices, students benefit greatly from real world work experience in their occupational area of interest. There are a large number of local businesses and work sites that have supported Wando student internships and other work-based experiences. However, it may not be possible to arrange an internship for each student who is interested. i
