NIDA/SAMHSA Blending Initiative Page 2 Products, Workshops, and Technical Assistance The NIDA/SAMHSA-ATTC Blending Initiative has harnessed the skills, resources, and knowledge of two Federal agencies to move important scientific findings into mainstream addiction treatment practice. Developed in 2001 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), this project is designed to meld science and practice to improve substance use disorder treatment. To accomplish this goal, "Blending Teams" combined staff from SAMHSA/CSAT's Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) Network, researchers, and community treatment providers from NIDA's Clinical Trials Network (CTN). Together they developed a strategic plan and products to disseminate the results of groundbreaking NIDA research. Buprenorphine Awareness: A Training for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals The Buprenorphine Awareness Blending Team developed a training package to create awareness about Buprenorphine among multi-disciplinary addiction professionals. The materials include information designed to increase motivation for bringing Buprenorphine to local communities, as well as information about what to expect when someone is treated with this medication. Treatment Planning M.A.T.R.S.: Utilizing the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to Make Required Data Collection Useful The ASI Blending Team designed a training package to transform required "paperwork" into clinically useful information. The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is one of the most widely used tools for the assessment of substance use-related problems. This training package teaches clinicians how the ASI information can be used for clinical applications and assist in program evaluation activities. Motivational Interviewing Assessment: Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficiency (MIA:STEP) The MI Blending Team developed a collection of tools for mentoring counselors in the use of Motivational Interviewing skills during clinical assessments. The Motivational Interviewing Assessment protocol has produced improvements in frequency of client attendance and retention in treatment during the first month of care, two predictors of positive treatment outcomes. Using this package will enhance both counselor MI skills and the supervisor's ability to provide more structured, focused, and effective clinical supervision. Short-Term Opioid Withdrawal Using Buprenorphine: Findings and Strategies from a NIDA Clinical Trials Network Study This Blending Team designed a training package to instruct providers in the administration of a 13-day Buprenorphine taper for opioid-dependent patients. The training reviews the results from research conducted by the NIDA Clinical Trials Network that compared Buprenorphine to clonidine in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition, the training provides instruction for implementing this protocol into treatment settings. Topics include methods of evaluation and induction, the taper schedule, and use of ancillary medications during treatment. Promoting Awareness of Motivational Incentives (PAMI) The Promoting Awareness of Motivational Incentives (PAMI) Blending Team developed the tools contained in this package to build awareness of Motivational Incentives (MI) as a science-based therapeutic strategy within the addiction treatment field. MI, also referred to as contingency management, is a form of behavioral therapy based on B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning principles. Positive rewards increase client retention in treatment programs, a strong predictor of positive treatment outcomes, more than counseling alone (Higgins et al., 1994, Petry et al., 2000). The products in this package illustrate positive outcomes and lessons learned from the NIDA Clinical Trials Network study, Motivational Incentives for Enhanced Drug Abuse Recovery (MIEDAR).

The Change Book applies the stages of change and principles of Motivational Interviewing to the organizational change process. Best Practices in Addiction Treatment training materials, produced by the National ATTC Network, include four evidence-based practices and guides for adoption within addiction treatment organizations. Moving Toward Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care Introduction to Recovery Management Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care Access to Recovery Training and Technical Assistance Peer Mentoring for Recovery Support Service Providers Recovery Management for Clergy and Faith- Based Organizations Recovery Management for Native American ATR Providers Recovery Management is the groundbreaking monograph by William L. White, MA, Ernest Kurtz, PhD, and Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC, the first in Great Lakes ATTC s Recovery Management Monograph Series. Perspectives on Systems Transformation: How Visionary Leaders are Shifting Addiction Treatment Toward a Recovery- Oriented System of Care is the second monograph in the Great Lakes series. It presents interviews by William L. White with H. Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH, Thomas A Kirk, PhD, Arthur C. Evans, PhD, Michael Boyle, Phillip Valentine, and Lonnetta Albright. These leaders provide inspiring examples and practical details to help willing systems embark on this journey. Peer-Based Recovery Support Services is a collection of articles developed for the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services by William L. White in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Recovery Organization-Achieving Recovery Together (PRO-ACT). These will be combined with additional articles for a future Great Lakes Recovery Management monograph.

Conflict Unraveled: Fixing Problems at Work and In Families is an innovative, practical guide written by Great Lakes partner Andra Medea, MA and published by PivotPoint Press. Ms. Medea also has a new on-line course for addiction professionals. Healing the Stigma of Depression: A Guide for Helping Professionals is a self-study manual written by Pamela Woll for the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC) and Great Lakes ATTC, offering an in-depth look at depression, stigma, effects, and opportunities to address stigma in consumers lives and in society as a whole.

It presents a conceptual model for strength-based treatment and a collection of clinical tools for implementing a strength-based approach. How to Get the Piranhas Out of Your Head is a series of strength-based cognitive therapy resources by Pamela Woll, published by Human Priorities. It includes a funny, colorillustrated booklet for consumers, a Piranha Workbook, and a Piranha Leader s Guide with a seven-session group process.

The series includes a Clinician s Guide and a pocket booklet for service members and veterans. The Neuroscience of Addiction & Judicial Decision Making was developed by Randall Webber, MPH, head of the Great Lakes ATTC s criminal justice efforts, for NIDA, Illinois TASC, and the Great Lakes ATTC. Mr. Webber has also developed a training platform for TIP 44, Substance Abuse Treatment for Adults in the Criminal Justice System for the Great Lakes ATTC.
