Note: Proper configuration of your mail server and DNS records are necessary to ensure mail delivery and abuse of your server. ARTICLE: QS41341 AUTHOR: TEAM UPDATE: SEPT 2007 APPLICABLE: WINDOWS 2003 SOLUTION Follow these steps to configure the setup for your SmarterMail server. STEP1: Open http://dns.fullcontrol.net/ Enter hostxxx where hostxxx is the first 7 characters of your account name. Enter the password for this account. You can find this Information on your NAI documentation.
Click the New Zone button.
Enter the Domain Name to be added to the DNS server in the Domain Name field. Enter an IP assigned to your server that you wish to use for SMTP traffic in the Email Server IP field. Enter the IP of the Web server and FTP server if desired. Click the submit button.
Note: When creating a new DNS record for Email traffic on your server, use the same Email server IP for all domains.
The zone has been created and a Zone Administration page is displayed to show specific DNS records. This window may be closed. Please send e-mail to support@fullcontrol.net containing your name, company name, account number, host name of mail server (e.g. mail.fullcontrol.net), and its IP address in DNS. We will use this information to create a PTR record for your zone.
STEP 2: To setup SmarterMail, open the Login to SmarterMail icon on the desktop.
Enter admin for both username and password fields. Click Login.
Enter the fully qualified MX record of a mail server that will be hosted on this server, e.g. mail.fullcontrol.net. Change the password in the password field. Click Next. Click Next through page 5 of 5 to accept default mail settings.
Click the Add Domain button to add your domain to SmarterMail. The Add Domain button is also available under the Manage menu.
Enter the domain name to add to SmarterMail and choose the IP used for the MX record in the Domain IP drop down menu. Click Save.
Click the Technical tab. Check Require SMTP Authentication. This setting requires users to be added to SmarterMail before they may use your mail server for sending mail. Click Save.
Click Settings and choose Protocol Settings.
Click the SMTP Out tab. Change the Outbound IP to the IP used when creating the MX record in DNS. Click Save. Further information on configuring SmarterMail is available at http://help.smartertools.com/smartermail/v4/
Step 3: Open http://dns.fullcontrol.net/. Enter hostxxx where hostxxx is the first 7 characters of your account name. Enter the password for this account.
Click the icon between the zone name and the delete button to view a zone report.
The Zone report verifies many important settings are correct in your DNS and mail server configuration. Some mail servers blacklist other mail servers due to incorrect mail server configurations. Correct any WARN or FAIL entries in the Status column before using your mail server. You have successfully configured your Mail Server!
