Virtualization In-Memory Pros & Cons with In-Memory Computing Virtualized
Virtualization In-Memory Top 3 Innovation Priorities in IT infrastructure % of respondents who said area was a priority What this includes Cloud computing 84% Private cloud and virtualized environments Public cloud-based infrastructure and platform services Data access and analytics 58% Low-cost data storage and access platforms for big data and massive analytics Shared data services Unified communications and collaboration 53% Integrated communications, messaging, and presence across voice, desktop video, email, and chat Shared collaboration and knowledge management platforms and tools, including social networking Source: Getting value from IT infrastructure innovation, McKinsey Quarterly, Number 27, Fall 2012 2013 SAP AG. Virtualization In-Memory SAP Customers TCO and Cloud Computing Opportunity Customers are investing in Cloud and Virtualization Projects to lower their SAP landscape TCO and Improve their business agility Customers are looking to SAP to provide them with Enterprise Solution with an integrated Real Time Data Platform that is Optimized and Supported for SAP landscapes and systems by SAP. 2013 SAP AG. Virtualization In-Memory TCO considerations SAP HANA is designed for parallelization and scale-out with built-in cluster and resource management Use of virtualization technology can decreases TCO through fast and flexible provisioning techniques, cloning of VMs or by isolating different workloads running on the same physical server. Since SAP HANA SPS 05 multi-sid installation or storage based system copy is supported using standard SAP HANA LM tools without additional licenses costs. Key capabilities of virtualization technology like overprovisioning are not applicable for in-memory optimized applications like SAP HANA. 2013 SAP AG. All rights reserved. CUSTOMER 8
Virtualization In-Memory Performance considerations SAP HANA is designed for high performance, running on Intel Xeon processors Performance within virtualized environments may be sufficient to demonstrate possibilities and features of SAP HANA. However, as it has been optimization for Intel hardware, SAP HANA may not perform well within virtualized environments. The maximum number of cores and/or amount of memory per VM currently limits the use of virtualization technology to development & test environments HW resource manager of hypervisor may be less optimized or even interfere with autonomous HW utilization of the built-in SAP HANA database resource manager 2013 SAP AG.
