3 Scaling to keep pace with an escalating information structure EMC is a trusted partner to many businesses and services providers, helping them store, manage, protect, and analyze their information. The strength of these relationships has transformed the company into a global enterprise that manufactures and distributes hundreds of hardware and software products and delivers a full range of professional services. To handle the business growth and optimize its global operations, EMC made investments in SAP Business Suite applications. Concurrent with these investments, the company launched the SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW) application on an Oracle database in an effort to support extract, transform, and load processes and analytics for its SAP Business Suite applications. EMC quickly saw challenges in managing business needs on its initial SAP BW configuration. With the intent of enabling the most accurate and current data possible, EMC originally planned to run hourly loads for some key data elements. But long load times limited the company to running only 10 batch loads per day. Even at this reduced level, batch loads were not always complete by the start of the next business day deepening user frustration and preventing IT from meeting its service-level agreements. Faced with these challenges, EMC sought a longterm solution that could deliver a sustainable data management strategy as well as low-latency performance, regardless of how many terabytes of data the company threw at it. That solution would turn out to be SAP BW powered by SAP HANA. Thanks to SAP HANA, our business has more faith in the data that it s running reports against. 4 Transitioning to a cost-effective data management approach Having witnessed the real-time performance of the in-memory computing functionality of the SAP HANA platform in a previous deployment, EMC was confident that SAP BW powered by SAP HANA would be capable of delivering necessary performance levels now and in the future. With the company firmly committed to SAP, it needed to ensure a robust data growth management strategy was in place to support SAP BW and SAP HANA. By adding SAP IQ database software as a near-line storage (NLS) solution for SAP BW, EMC would be able to reduce the deployment cost of SAP HANA by moving historical information to a disk-based database. As a result of the tight integration between SAP BW, SAP HANA, and SAP IQ, maintenance efforts would be dramatically reduced and data access times shortened. In preparing for its move to SAP HANA, EMC needed to shrink the size of its data set by cleansing the Oracle data and moving older and archived information into SAP IQ for near-line storage. This process involved offloading expired or unused data marts, aggregates, and cubes that were not relevant for daily reporting. Within six months, the data housed on Oracle had been reduced from 7 TB to 4.5 TB and was eventually compressed to just 800 GB of in-memory data after the migration to SAP HANA. The result: EMC had 2 TB of memory storage capabilities allowing for up to 1.5 TB of memory utilization across its real-time data platform. With near-line storage using SAP IQ at the center of EMC s data management strategy for SAP applications, the company was not only able to go live with SAP BW powered by SAP HANA, but it was also well equipped for sustained growth and to continue scaling for future business demands. 4 / 6

5 Speeding information access and ensuring data quality Just one month after going live, the benefits of SAP BW powered by SAP HANA and near-line storage with SAP IQ software were clear. Today, EMC s data load times have decreased by as much as 60%. Plus, its query times are now markedly faster than a traditional row-based data storage platform. And the good news continues. Previously, EMC was capable of running loads 10 times per day. Now EMC can run them hourly with confidence ensuring key employees have immediate access to timely, more accurate information. By deploying SAP HANA and using near-line storage through SAP IQ, EMC now has a more responsive platform that allows the company to cost-effectively manage its tremendous data growth. 6 EMC Reaping the ongoing benefits of SAP HANA In the near future, with the sales order processing solution and all sales data being incorporated into SAP Business Suite, EMC plans to expand its SAP HANA platform footprint in order to increase access to real-time analytics. EMC also plans to continue using the near-line storage capabilities of SAP IQ to manage the company s ongoing information growth while lowering TCO on the computing side. Furthermore, EMC will turn to SAP IQ database software for upcoming implementations, such as archiving for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, which will permit the company to better manage data throughout its ecosystem.
