Preparation Product Heavy Duty Floor Paint Floor Paint Provides a protective satin finish Tough and durable, resistant to mild chemicals Based on polyurethane alkyd resins to withstand damage from spillage and repeated cleaning Ideal for use on most concrete and wooden floors such as garages, warehouses, workshops and factories Thinned by 5%, to soak into the surface COLOUR & Clear RM Trade TiPS 17-27 Primers explained...18-19 Trim system summary...20-21 FAQ s....22-25 INTERIOR... 22-23 EXTERIOR... 24-25 Colours explained...26-27 Trade Tips It is important to thin the first coat, to allow it to soak into the surface. Ensure the floor is clean and dry before painting. FAQ Q. I have never applied floor paint how do I apply this product easily? Why has the floor paint stuck to my car tyres? How long should I wait before painting a new concrete floor? The paint can be applied exactly as if emulsion paint was being used on a wall. Cut in the edges with a brush and apply the rest with a roller. Using the roller on an extension pole makes the job a lot easier. Work in equal sections each time to keep an open edge. The rougher or more textured the floor is the heavier the pile of roller needed. In most instances this is due to a lack of adhesion between the floor and paint coating. Surface contaminates such as dirt and grease are usually to blame. Applying a very thick coating in one application can also cause problems as the paint will take longer to cure. Re-introducing the vehicle to the painted floor before the paint has had time to fully cure can also cause this problem. As a guide allow a drying period of a month for every inch of concrete laid in depth. Conditions in the building will also affect the drying period. Application of the paint to the floor before it is fully dry will result in a premature breakdown. GET ON WITH IT! 16 RM = Ready Mixed 17

FAQ. Interior Q. How do I treat nicotine stained surfaces? Why has my internal woodwork painted with solvent based brilliant white gloss turned yellow over a period of time? The surfaces need to be washed down to remove as much surface contamination as possible. Apply the Alkali Resisting Wall Primer to any stained areas. Emulsion paints or Acrylic Eggshell can be used as the finish. Discolouration occurs with all solvent based paints over a period of time, but is particularly noticeable when brilliant white has been used. Yellowing is speeded up when the painted surfaces are excluded from natural daylight. Nicotine and oil burning appliances will also discolour the paint. Leyland s Fast Drying Gloss will remain whiter for longer in such conditions. What has caused runs to appear on my gloss painted surfaces? A white deposit similar to crystals has appeared on my new plaster walls, what do I do? My customer doesn t like the smell from solvent based paints what can I use to paint the trim in their house? I ve applied two coats as recommended but can still see the colour beneath what can I do? This has been caused by uneven application or applying further paint where the coating has started to set creating thick joints. Applying the paint too generously and then not spreading it out evenly across the surface will cause curtaining and sagging. Once the paint is sufficiently dry and hardened rub down and paint again. This is known as efflorescence which are white salt deposits that are brought to the surface by moisture. The appearance of the deposits would suggest that the plaster is not dry yet. The deposits can be dry brushed away with nylon or bristle brush and the surface checked periodically until they stop. Leyland Super Leytex High Opacity Matt and Contract Matt can be used on new plaster. Leyland Fast Drying Gloss or Fast Drying Satin is low odour and quick drying. It is also very tough and hard wearing. It would be ideal in this situation. Two coats are usually sufficient when painting previously painted surfaces, however additional coats may be required when painting contrasting colours. If painting over contrasting colours with Vinyl Silk apply a coat of Vinyl Matt in a similar shade underneath as this will help to improve the hiding power of the paint. 22 23

FAQ. Exterior Q. I ve got to gloss paint some stone window sills externally what do I need? Why have I not achieved the coverage rate quoted on the tins? Alkali Resisting Wall Primer is the right product. It helps seal powdery surfaces and resist Alkali attack. Leyland Undercoat and Gloss can then be applied. Coverage is usually measured as a theoretical average of the paint being applied to both painted/unpainted and various masonry surfaces. The covering or spread rate of paint coatings will be determined by the condition, porosity or profile of the surface they are applied to. Most surfaces paints are applied to are naturally absorbent. You should quench this absorbency with good quality primers or sealers before applying finishing materials. Unsealed surfaces will absorb more material which will reduce the spread rate. The profile of the surface will also effect the spread rate of the paint e.g. masonry surfaces with a raised profile can increase the surface area by 30%. Do I need to use a stabilising solution before applying masonry paint? Not if the paint is going on to a sound clean surface but if there is a possibility the surface is extremely porous or chalky then a stabiliser is essential. Stabilising solution is a highly penetrative material designed to bind friable or chalky surfaces and quench highly absorbent surfaces to provide a suitable bound and sealed surface for any water based masonry coating. To ensure there is good adhesion of the masonry coating the surface must be nonglossy. The stabilising solution should be applied to a small test area and if it dries to a glossy finish then it should be thinned with one part white spirit to two parts stabilising solution. Products should always be used in accordance with application instructions and precautions on the product data sheet. The Masonry paint I applied this morning has washed off in the first rain shower after I finished, why? This is a water based material and if the paint film hasn t had time to fully cure before the rain shower, the rain would soften & thin the coating causing it to wash away. Water based coatings dry mainly by evaporation of the water content. Cold, humid conditions & low temperatures (10 C & below) can prevent the paint from drying so it shouldn t be applied during these conditions or just before they are expected. If there is any doubt about the conditions at the time of application use Truguard Pliolite Masonry finish which is rain resistant within 20 minutes and can be applied in temperatures as low as -5 C. 24 25
