The Graduate School now offers 36 Certificate, Master s, and Doctoral programs in fields as diverse as business, engineering, and the sciences, to art, education, and nursing. Degree programs are available in each of our five academic colleges. All Bradley fulltime graduate faculty members hold a terminal degree. Bradley s Graduate School specializes in professional programs for emerging leaders. The strength of graduate education lies in the close collaboration of students with faculty and professional partners. Small classes, professional experience, and a graduate student-to-faculty ratio of 4:1 give students the best in hands-on learning. Collaborative partnerships in research and creative production are rooted in the latest applied, real-world knowledge that centers on experiential learning. In the classroom, the lab, or in a clinical setting, faculty and students make contributions to science, the arts, and education. The campus hosts graduate students from more than a dozen countries. About one-third of the graduate students bring international study experiences to campus. International study exchanges are common. This diversity provides invaluable domestic and global perspectives on current issues and opportunities. Admissions is coordinated through the Graduate Admissions Office, which offers information, step-by-step directions, and a downloadable application. Admissions are ongoing; applications should be submitted three months prior to the student s first semester. Admission to the 60 61 semester hour M.A. Human Development Counseling (HDC), Track I: School Counseling and the 60-semester-hour, Track II: Clinical Mental Health Counseling as well as the 36-semester-hour M.A. Leadership in Educational Administration (EDA) and M.A. Leadership in Human Service Administration (HSA) is based on a thorough review of each applicant s documents. Requirements include: 1. Three professional and/or academic letters of reference, one of which must be from a current supervisor. For HSA, letters should address leadership, ethical behaviors, and professional competencies. 2. An undergraduate last-60-hour grade point average of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale 3. Completion of the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) within five years prior to admission 4. Additional requirements for EDA include submitting a portfolio demonstrating teaching expertise and leadership potential and an interview with faculty and possibly school partners. Financial Assistance The Graduate School generously supports students with assistantships and scholarships each year. Most graduate assistants in Master s programs receive a minimum of a 50 percent tuition waiver and a stipend; they can gain additional valuable experience learning from faculty in instructional activities, in clinical settings, and in research and creative production. Last year, more than 57 percent of graduate students received financial support. Beyond the assistance provided by Bradley, support is also provided by state and federal funding agencies, as well as by private businesses with a local, national, and international presence.
Department of Leadership in Education, Human Services, and Counseling (EHC) The Leadership in Education, Human Services, and Counseling program faculty collaborate to gain national distinction in preparing diverse and qualified students from local, regional, national, and international locations to become competent, socially responsible administrative and counseling leaders in various settings including schools, nonprofit, and for-profit agencies. Vision Statement The vision of EHC is to create environments that advance optimal learning by: Providing innovative, multidisciplinary instruction emphasizing the development of knowledge, values, and broadly based experiences Integrating teaching, research, and service within and among our disciplines while maintaining the ethical practices and uniqueness of each program Promoting and modeling social responsibility and social justice Promoting and modeling community involvement through collaboration, teaching, research, and service Exercising leadership through exemplary and innovative programs. Preparation For Leadership Each of the programs within the department has a central focus of preparing students as leaders in the field of choice whether it be in education, human services, or counseling. The qualities of leadership are nurtured through engagement in experiential learning that is reflective of contemporary work environments and based on thoughtful research. Specialized learning and training opportunities are supported through carefully supervised practica and internships through local schools, counseling, and human service organizations. Unique training and research options are available including the Counseling Research & Training Clinic and the Center for Collaborative Brain Research. Specialty Areas Students can choose several specialties within this department: Educational Administration for licensure for building level administration in Illinois schools, Human Services Administration as leaders in human service agencies or higher education, and Human Development Counseling for licensure for counselors in pre-k-12 schools and agencies. Accredited Programs Department programs adhere to national standards set by the appropriate accrediting organizations including Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC).
M.A. Human Development Counseling Program Overview The program in Human Development Counseling prepares professional counselors to work with a diverse population of clients in a variety of educational, community, and mental health settings. Two specialty areas are offered: Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Professional School Counseling. The faculty believe that the counselor works to promote the growth and development of people. The human development counseling model for preparing counselors recognizes the profound interactive effect of people and human systems. Because we believe counselors should experience personal and professional growth and development, all courses provide cognitive and experiential learning. Practica and internships allow for the development of a specialty area consistent with a student s plans for future employment. All graduates are eligible to take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) the semester in which they graduate. The NCE is required for certification as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Illinois. Opportunities in Human Development Counseling Counselors work in a wide variety of public and private organizations, in addition to pre K-12 schools and colleges and universities. These may include health care facilities, job training and career development centers, social service agencies, correctional institutions, and residential care facilities. Counselors work for organizations engaged in community improvement and social change as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs and state and local government agencies. Counselors also work for health maintenance organizations and in group practice or private practice. Demand for counselors will increase as the elderly population grows and society focuses on ways of developing and maintaining mental health. Bradley University s Human Development Counseling Master s degree prepares counselors for certification and licensure in all areas of counseling. Faculty and staff assist students and graduates in selecting an area of concentration as well as obtaining employment information and assistance. Program of Study The Master of Arts in Human Development Counseling program requires 60 semester hours of coursework for completion. Programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Students can therefore take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) during their final semester and apply for National Certified Counselor (NCC) and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Illinois. The program may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, with classes offered in the evenings and during interim and summer sessions. M.A. Leadership in Educational Administration Program Overview First established in 1946, the Educational Administration program has continued to evolve with the recent redesign receiving approval by the Illinois State Board of Education in May 2013. The new program prepares principals in providing the leadership for students and teachers to be successful. An integral part of the redesign is the admission process that requires a portfolio demonstrating teaching expertise and leadership potential and an interview as conditions for admission. Applicants who have a Master s degree are eligible to take the necessary coursework to qualify for Illinois licensure to be a school principal. Once admitted to the program, students learn to analyze organizational problems from multiple perspectives and other effective leadership practices in order to develop qualities associated with effective leadership and informed decisionmaking. Courses focus on practical issues that school leaders face with an emphasis on making connections necessary for effective administration. An expanded internship provides additional opportunities for considering issues from a variety of perspectives and for making the connections between theory and practice. The program partners with school districts to help provide clear connections between knowledge of schools and society, practical administrative skills, and a strong sense of the democratic values of equity and justice. Faculty believe leadership skills can be developed; leaders must understand multiple perspectives, value diversity, and treat all persons with respect. Graduates of the Bradley program are expected to develop into leaders who empower others based upon their own clearly defined personal values. Graduate students have many opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to become capable leaders willing to take responsibility for necessary changes in schools and to continuously adapt to changing school environments.
