Public Speaking Summer Camp Outline Camp Description: Is your child full of wonderful ideas but too shy or fearful to speak up? Then this camp is for your child! No matter what he grows up to become, public speaking is a necessary and indispensable life skill we all need at some point in our lives. Through hands-on exercises and practice sessions, this summer program introduces campers to the world of public speaking. Your child will discover the gift of communication and will learn to present polished speeches and engaging debates before their peers while becoming more self-confident and proud of themselves. To enhance their creativity, campers will conduct some of their activities outdoors (locations:tbd). Parents are welcome to join campers on their presentations. Public Speaking Summer Camp Program At-A-Glance: *Week 1 Jun 15-19 and Aug 3-7 COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY Campers will be introduced to the building blocks of Public Speaking. They will learn the importance of communicating their ideas effectively by using their very own body! Why Speak In Public? Why Are Public Speaking Skills Important? How To Deal With Stage Fright Using Our Body To Communicate Effectively: Eye Contact Voice Control/Voice Projection Nonverbal language gestures, hands, arms, legs and their interpretation *Week 2 Jun 22-26 INFORMATIONAL COMMUNICATION AND EFFECTIVE SPEECH WRITING Campers will learn to write effective speeches while applying the basics of public speaking. They will learn the importance of writing like they talk, making it personal and creating interesting openings and memorable finishes with a variety of topics. 3

Organizing Effective Speeches Using Notecards Outlining *Week 3 Jul 6-10 CAPTURING YOUR AUDIENCE The message of a great speech is lost if the speaker doesn t know about his audience. During this week, campers will learn all the ins and outs of an audience, learning about the importance of demographics and how to better craft their speeches. What Is An Audience? What is Demographics? Who Is My Audience? Writing For Specific Audiences *Week 4 Jul13-17 NARRATIVE SPEECHES AND EFFECTIVE SPEECH WRITING Most people will have to give a narrative speech at some point in their lives and because children are already great storytellers, during this week they will learn to write and give a polished speech based on a story of their own. 4

What Is A Narrative Speech? Incorporating Meaningful Information Pacing and Fluency Daily Speeches and Presentations with In-depth *Week 5 Jul 20-24 THE ART OF PERSUASION How do we convince others to follow our ideas, our lead? This week, campers will learn to use their own ability to influence others in a positive and effective way. They will learn how and why the art of persuasion works and how it plays a key role in our ability to influence others. Pillars of Persuasion: Ethos, Pathos, Logos Organizing Persuasive Speeches and Debates Daily Speeches and Debates with In-depth *Week 6 Jul 27-31 ESSENTIALS OF DEBATING Giving a speech is one thing. Debating someone else s argument is yet another necessary skill. This week, campers will be introduced to the essentials of debating. They will learn how to prepare for a debate and present it in a polished, professional matter. 5

Debate Basics Writing Effective Debates How To Prepare For a Refutation Daily Debates and Presentations with In-depth *Week 7 Jun 15-19 and Aug 3-7 COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY Campers will be introduced to the building blocks of Public Speaking. They will learn the importance of communicating their ideas effectively by using their very own body tools! Why Speak In Public? Why Are Public Speaking Skills Important?
