2 Core Curriculum for Certified Peer Specialist Basic Training People with psychiatric diagnoses are coming toger across country as majors players in system transformation; refore - The mental health system is making a shift toward recovery and consumers have a key role to play in supporting that shift; refore Creating a common understanding for term recovery and common language to talk about recovery process is very important in transformation of mental health system; refore One of major recovery tools that consumers bring to a service delivery system is ir own experiences and recovery stories; refore - At each stage in recovery process re is a danger that person may get stuck at that stage and not be able to move on with his or her life; refore Consumers have a very special and unique role to play in promoting and supporting recovery process; refore - Staff does not have control over community or home environments of people y serve. It is very important that program environments become environments that promote recovery ; refore Session 1 Welcome, Introductions and Overview of Training Session 2 State System and Role of Training Session 3 : Overview Session 4 Using One s Story as a Tool Session 5 : Dangers Session 6 The Role of Peer Support in Session 7 Creating Program Environments that Promote provides an opportunity for group to create common understanding and guidelines for an effective training experience. explains why you are at this training, how it fits into what is happening in state/agency, and participatory nature of training sessions. presents some common images and language for discussing recovery and introduces five basic stages in recovery process that speak to most people with recovery experience. explores difference in an illness story and a recovery story and enables m to experience power and potential of ir own story as a recovery tool to be used to educate and inspire both ir peers and non-peer staff. explores possible dangers at each stage and what mental health system often does that is unhelpful or even harmful and prevents people from moving on with ir lives. helps participants think and share in a systematic way unique role of Peer Specialist and how that role differs from role of traditional, non-consumer staff. explains how negative messages keep people from moving forward with ir lives and what it mean to surround people with possibility of recovery. 2
3 Personal relationships are bedrock of recovery process; refore - The diagnosis of mental illness often disables people by reducing ir positive sense of self and y lose contact with ir passion for life and ir potential for creating life that y want; refore We need to seriously examine our beliefs and values to determine wher or not y promote and support recovery process and agree on those that do; refore It is important that we learn to listen and help people who have been disabled by old system to get in touch with ir passion and potential for creating life that y want; refore - It is important that we find ways to help people get in touch with ir passion and potential for creating future that y want; refore Even though a person may be in touch with what he wants, re are many things that keep him from believing that he can create life he wants; one of biggest blocks is his fears; refore Anor major block to creating life that one wants is one s negative self-talk; refore A third block is belief that a person needs to be fixed by someone else, because she does not have ability to solve her own problems; refore Session 8 Creating Relationships that Promote Session 9 The Impact of Diagnosis on One s Self-image Session 10 Beliefs and Values that Promote and Support Session 11 Effective Listening and Art of Asking Questions: Part 1 Session 12 Dissatisfaction as an Avenue for Change Session 13 Facing One s Fears Session 14 Combating Negative Self-talk Session 15 Problem Solving with Individuals explores key elements in establishing personal relationships that help anor move on with his or her life. explores five stages in recovery process at a deeper level by looking at a classic recovery story told by a consumer. shares some of emerging beliefs and values of a mental health system that promotes and supports recovery. demonstrates art of asking questions and kinds of questions that are helpful and not helpful in putting a person in with his or her own inner truth. shares a process of asking question that help people reflect on ir own lives and make ir own decisions about what y may want to work on in ir lives. provides a safe environment for discussing uncomfortable feelings and thoughts and what is involved in learning to handle m. explores relationship of thoughts and feelings and shares ways y have learned to combat negative self-talk. shares a problem solving process, that when applied to most problems, can be very helpful in finding solutions. 3
4 Spirituality is an area that we need to explore, because many people have stated that getting in touch with God, ir inner strength, ir higher power, etc. has played a major role in ir own recovery; refore While re is not a lot of good material readily available, many Certified Peer Specialists have to spend a lot of time leading groups in day programs; refore There are certain kinds of questions that are more helpful than ors in helping a person get in touch with his or her own inner wisdom; refore - Peers working in system as service providers and shift to recovery often bring a new dynamic to workplace that can cause tensions and interpersonal conflicts ; refore As a review and pull-toger of all we have been discussing, it is helpful to understand basic building blocks of recovery process; refore In taking care of oneself and in working with ors, it is helpful to know dangers at various stages in recovery process and interventions that can help a person move though and beyond se dangers; refore - Session 16 The Role of Spirituality in Session 17 Facilitating Dialogues Session 18 Effective Listening and Art of Asking Questions: Part 2 Session 19, 20 & 21 and Integrity in Workplace Session 22 The Building Blocks of Session 23 : Dangers and Interventions engages group in a discussion about spirituality that does not define or restrict dialogue and leaves interpretations and conclusions open to individual. presents guidelines and procedures for facilitating 24 Dialogues that can be used in mental health programs. examines sessions on Dissatisfaction as an Avenue for Change, Facing One s Fears, Combating Negative Self-talk, and Problem Solving in order to identify kinds of questions that are most helpful. explores a variety of potential areas of conflict in workplace, presents some of basic techniques of mediation and conflict resolution and practices se in group role-plays and small group settings. uses group s experience and wisdom to determine basic building blocks that need to be in place for a successful recovery process to be initiated and supported. explores more deeply five stages in recovery process, possible dangers at each stage, how mental health system often plays into se danger and a variety of interventions that have been helpful at each stage. 4
5 Experiencing a sense of hopelessness and despair is such a major issue in mental health system that we need to take a second look at how we can help people get in touch with ir passion and potential for creating life y want; refore It is important that we evaluate training and look at next steps; refore - Session 24 Creating Life One Wants: Accomplishing One s Goals Session 25 Final Reflection, Evaluation and Next Steps shares a variety of exercises and activities that help motivate individuals who appear unwilling or unable to take responsibility for making major changes in ir lives. gives group opportunity to evaluate overall training experience and to discuss next steps in each individual s journey and journey of group as a whole. 5
