We can use what we know about rates to convert units of different measures or to find the conversion rate when given 2 equivalent measures. Conversions can be written as rates ( 12 inches = 12 inches in 1 foot). We can then find the equivalent 1foot rate that has the value we are converting to. Your student should be able to answer these questions about converting units. 1) Will you have more or less units after you convert? How do you know? 2) What do you estimate the answer to be? Why? 3) What place value will you round your answer to? Why? Here are some ideas to work with conversions with your student. 1) Find the exchange rate for the currency of another country. Determine the cost of different items that are sold in dollars for someone who uses a different currency. 2) Select an item from your pantry that has its volume or weight listed in two different measurements.
