KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Wilbert RideaU s 1961 death sentence by an all white, all male jury was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. After receiving the death penalty in two subsequent trials, Rideau had his sentence reduced to life in the Louisiana State Penitentiary in light of Furman v. Georgia. In 1976, he became editor of The Angolite, the prisoner-produced newsmagazine. Over the next quarter century, he won many of the nation s highest journalism awards. In March 1993, Life magazine called him The Most Rehabilitated Prisoner in America. That same year, he ventured into broadcast journalism, producing award-winning reports for national radio and television. In 1996, he became the only prisoner ever to receive the Louisiana Bar Association s highest journalistic honor for a documentary film he co-produced, The Execution of Antonio James. In 1998, he co-directed a documentary, The Farm: Angola, USA, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. He is the co-editor of The Wall Is Strong: Corrections in Louisiana, a textbook now in its fourth edition, and Life Sentences, an anthology of articles from The Angolite. In 2000, Wilbert Rideau won a new trial because of the systematic exclusion of blacks from the grand jury that indicted him in 1961. In 2005, he was convicted of manslaughter and released for time served. Wilbert Rideau was given the 2005 Champion of Justice Award by the NACDL and also honored by the Southern Center for Human Rights with its Human Rights Award for 2005. Since 2007, he has worked with the Federal Death Penalty Resource Counsel Project to address client resistance to life sentences. His autobiography, In the Place of Justice, published by Alfred Knopf of Random House, Inc., will be in bookstores this summer. Denny LeBoeuf is the Director of the ACLU s John Adams Project, assisting in the defense of the capitally charged Guantanamo detainees. She is a longtime capital defender, representing persons facing death at trial and in post-conviction in state and federal courts, and she teaches and consults with capital defense teams nationally. She was the founding Director of the Capital Post-Conviction Project in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is particularly interested in the litigation of mental health and in the ways in which race and poverty increase the traumatic burden carried by many clients. She was a member of the 2003 Committee that formulated the ABA Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases, and was Chair of the post-katrina Orleans Parish Public Defenders Board 2006-2007. She holds a J.D. from Tulane University and a B.A. from Hunter College. THE CAPITAL CASE DEFENSE SEMINAR SCHEDULE California Attorneys for Criminal Justice (CACJ) and the California Public Defenders Association (CPDA) are pleased to invite you to participate in the 2010 Capital Case Defense Seminar (CCDS). The CCDS is an intensive education opportunity for anyone involved in, or considering taking on, the defense of a capital case. It is designed not only for lawyers, but also for Mitigation specialists, paralegals, investigators, and experts working in capital defense. The CACJ/CPDA Capital Case Defense Seminar is the largest of its kind in the nation. CCDS is unique in that it offers lectures as well as specialized workshops that give participants the chance to brainstorm and exchange information with other participants. All reservations must be accompanied by a first night room and tax advance payment. All reservation modifications or cancellations must occur on or before January 21 st, 2010, to obtain a full refund. The Monterey Airport If you intend to fly into the Monterey Airport, you are encouraged to make reservations as far in advance as possible. A taxi from the Monterey Airport to the convention center costs approximately $20. Parking Guests of the Portola Plaza or Marriott Hotels will have their parking fees charged to their rooms with unlimited in-and-out access. Parking at the Marriott is $18 per day, valet only, and parking at the Portola Plaza is $15 per day for self-parking or $18 per day for valet. For those staying elsewhere, public parking structures are available in the area surrounding the conference center for $5 $8 per day.
