Synopsis This historical fiction novel takes place in the late 1880 s when the Statue of Liberty is getting ready to be shipped to America. Although the statue is ready to be shipped, there is no place yet built for the statue. America is trying to raise money to build a pedestal on which the statue can be placed. Lily s class is raising money to help, and Lily is trying to think of a way she can earn some money. Lily comes up with the idea of making crowns that look like the statues and her grandmother helps her make them. Lily s crowns are a hit and she now has money to donate for the pedestal. Lily and her father go to the harbor and watch as the boat carrying the boxes of statue pieces comes into the harbor. The entire city seems to be excited about the arrival.

LESSON 1 Chapters 1-2 1. In what time period is the story set? Give two examples from the story to support your answer. 2. What jobs does Lily do to earn two cents and a lollipop? 3. What country gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States? 4. What is a pedestal? Draw an example of one on the back of the paper. 5. Would you have liked to see the French ship carrying the Statue of Liberty pull into the harbor? Why or why not?

Lesson 5 Afterward 1. About how long did it take for the Statue of Liberty to be unveiled after it arrived in New York? 2. What had Mr. Pulitzer promised the readers of his newspaper? 3. Who was the president of the United States when the Statue was unveiled? 4. If the Statue of Liberty could talk what do you think she would have said at the unveiling? Why do you think she would have said that? 5. Nominate Lily for the Hero of the Week Award. What would you say to encourage people to vote for her?

Answer Key LESSON 1 1. The story is set in olden times. Supporting answers may vary but could include the way the children dress, the fact that the statue is not already here, they use horses and carriages to get around instead of cars. 2. Lily went to the store for Mrs. Rosen and watches a neighbor s baby to earn two cents and a lollipop. 3. France gave the Statue of Liberty to America. 4. A pedestal is a base upon which something can be set and displayed. 5. Lily s mother doesn t think poor people should have to pay for the pedestal and she wishes money was going to help the poor instead of building a pedestal. 6. Answers will vary. LESSON 2 1. Lily comes up with the idea to sell Liberty crowns. 2. The family member helped by: Grandmother helped her to make a pattern and cut the crowns Mother helped cut out the crowns Father brought back some poster material he got from a friend. 3. The rays of the crown stand for the sun shining on the seven seas and the seven continents. 4. Answers may vary. Lily s mother helped because she loved her daughter and probably liked working with her. 5. Answers will vary. LESSON 3 1. Lily s friend Rachel comes and they both yell together to get people s attention. 2. Lily admires Rachel s nerve to stand up to the older boys at school. 3. Lily sells crowns until 5:00 p.m. 4. Persistent means to continue steadily in spite of difficulty or opposition. 5. Yes, Lily and Rachel are good friends. Reasons for that will vary. 6. Answers will vary. One idea is that Lily knew it felt bad to not have money to give for the pedestal and she wanted the other girl to not feel bad.

LESSON 4 1. This story says the statue was packed in 213 boxes. 2. Lily, her father, and Rachel took a horse-drawn streetcar to the docking area. 3. The girls were able to watch the French ship arrive from the middle of the harbor on the steamboat A.C. Cheney. 4. The French ship arriving in the harbor happened first. 5. Answers will vary. Maybe they are getting caught up in all the excitement. 6. Answers will vary. LESSON 5 1. It took a year and a half for the statue to be unveiled. 2. Mr. Pulitzer had promised the readers that he would print the names of anyone who contributed to the building of the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. 3.
